Do you think that advertising in Pay Per Click search engines is a wise idea?

What are the experiences?

The problem I find is now it's getting so expensive like some hosts are paying almost $10 per click through on some keywords.

I was just looking at Findwhat.com. The current highest bid for the key words "web hosting" is now $2.78. If most clicks result in sales, I guess it is not so bad.

Does anyone that used or uses them have some stats?

Used a few of these pey-per-click engines about 4 months ago with various success.

Here's the breakdown (i'll rate them from the % of clicks that turned into sales... 10 being excellent turnover) Note: Holding usually 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th spot.

goclick.com - 4/10
Kanoodle.com - 2/10
bay9.com - 5/10
search123.com - 6/10

Didn't go with goto.com/overture simply because the top placements are...well...way too high. Plus, never used or plan to use it. Wow, top bid is currently 6.51  .

Anyways, hope that helps

If people are willing to pay $5-$10 per click, then there has to be a reason.

I'm trying Overture but seems that doesn't worth

I already spend more than $1k and the resoults aren't great.

To be listed #1 with the keyword web hosting you have to pay more than $6 per click, visits/sales rates is not great either.

My biggest question is.... who uses a pay per click search engine? They only get to see advertisers and not other important stuff that is related their search. I guess it is something like looking only at the ads in the Yellow Pages.

But people seem to do that and perhaps the right audience. A simple search on "web hosting". Results are a few hosts, the one that's paying the most "must" be a big company... so let's sign up.

Don't forget that placement on most of the ppc search engines also gets you placement elsewhere, at least in most cases on the metasearch sites like DogPile, MetaCrawler, search.com, etc. Top Overture listings get you into at least 10 other engines and directories.

How good your placement will be on any of these sites varies, but they're a consideration in calculating how much a ppc campaign is really worth.

That is true. I also wander were those links come from in Yahoo.

Aren't there more hosts that advertise this way or aren't they sharing their secrets with us?
