Hi everybody

I know this is a very off topic question, but I am currently looking for a change of scenery, at the present time me and my wife live in Fall River, MA ... well, I really hate it around here, and we are now looking for a new state/town to move into.

Any suggestions ? I am looking for a nice town, not too big, but also not furgotten by time, I still need cable/dsl providers :), real estate .. about 150K for a 2-3 bedroom 1200sq ft, well ... just seomewhere nice .. away from gangs and my ex ;) anyody have any recommendations ?

My wife's requirement: ... a Wal-Mart 10 miles or less away ;)

Sally (my wife) also told me about Florida, that's her first choice .. I'm just a little weary about it, what about the hurricanes ;) plus, what about public safety ?.. anyway, I don't need the late bars, how's the real estate down there ? .. and .. no state tax ?

no snow !!! .. what a beutifull thing .. I think we are going to have some over here tomorrow .. darn

PS - West Palm real estate look very cheap .. something wrong with it ?

Having traveled practically everywhere in the U.S. (including Fall River, MA) I would recommend Wilmington, N.C. Beautiful town, great people, many resources, well-to-do but still affordable. Yes, it is hurricane bait, but every place has its downside.

I have associates in Seminole, FL (Gulf side) who say they're not affected too much by hurricanes. And I understand Ft. Myers has hardly ever been bothered by them.

Sarasota, FL has been ranked #1 best place to live and best place to work choosen by this url can be found at:

http://www.bestjobsusa.com/%7Ecandidate/bestplaces/index.asp

Which surprised me, but I do not know if it is for real or just making up like paying ratings?

But seriously Sarasota, FL is the #1st richest county in Florida which ranked #2nd by West Palm Beach, #3rd is Orlando

if you find a house here, average price is $200,000 to $16 Million and there are big hot market on DSL/CableModem, many stores open 24x7, easy access to the world whitest sand in the world Siesta Key located in Sarasota.

Right now, Sarasota is about reaching 600,000th resident by January 2001, then end of 2001, about 800,000 resident will be reached.

Sarasota is a nice place, I love it and been here for long time :)

Hope you will find your new living as well pal

Hawaii is the place to be!

Sands, Surf, S?@ and all!

I've been living there for the past 10 years. It's great!

One other thought, Carlos. Not to take anything away from Florida (I love it there too), but if you've lived up north a while you most likely will miss the change of seasons. The lure of the South's wonderful climate often blinds people to this fact and some (emphasize *some*) can't stand it, believe it or not.

I would suggest St. Simon's Island, GA. DSL available through Cybergate (just bought by earthlink) and there maybe cable modems now. Go anywhere and sign up with Directtv and use cable modem to satelite link for $40-50 per month. St. Simons is a barrier island just off the cost of Brunswick, GA. About 1 hour and 15 minutes from Jacksonville, FL and about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Savannah, GA. Super Walmart in Brunswick. Beautiful island with bike paths and the like. Very safe with gated communities. Last murder on St. Simons was in the 80's I think.

I can se his will be a tought decision to make ...

See I lived everywhere, before I moved to the US I had lived in Spain, France, Italy and Switzeland (and afcorse Portugal), I allways like it like that .. on the move ;)

for the past 5 years I've been stck up there in MA, altrought it's not as bad as some other plances I've seen, it's becoming a dull area, people are not very well educated, and the tech jobs are rare (around boston you will find some)

My wife in the other hand has lived here all her live, it took me 2 years to convince here to move, she finally agree to it, as long as we find a nice place and settle down (plannign in having a baby in 2 years), so far Florida and Colorado seem to be my choices ..

Any more suggestions will be welcome

and SarasotaWeb ,.. Sarasota does seem to be a nice place :) ..

Marty .. thanks for the tip as well, let me go back to realtor.com and check the real estate there :)

Well,

In all honesty? Move to Canada - you get the beautiful Rockies, the windswept Praries, the rugged Canadian shield, and of course the lovely coasts (I'm sounding like a brochure)... Plus medicare (as ailing as it may be - it's better than the US pay-as-you-go system), friendly, generally tolerant and polite folks, and NO GUNS.

And no, for those of you who believe we live in igloos up here (and I'm always amazed how many people actually still believe this), we DO have nice, warm summers...

I know I'm inviting a flame war.. but I really do think that Canada does have its benefits over the US. To save my skin, I won't mention foreign policy :-)

As far as the US goes... I've been all over the US, and I must admit I'm partial to the bigger cities (Minneapolis, NY, San Francisco), but in my opinion, the best place in the US is Catalina Island.

Unfortunately, I doubt you'll be able to get good, speedy Internet service there. Ah, well. :)

Will put my two cents in for San Antonio Texas.
Beautiful people, plus the most friendly culture you will ever find anywhere. Ive never seen such southern hospitality
its just all arond San Antone. Great weather year round, sometimes a bit hot but you get used to it. Wonderful frozen margaritas to cool you off. Plenty of nice stuff to do for FREE, including Riverwalk, Alamo and more!
In San Antonio they usually have some sort of fiesta or activity every few months that will last a week or weekend, so there is always something to do for everyone!
Good Luck

Come to Cali!!!

Do you like crime? We got that! Traffic? I'm wondering how long it will take for the 405 to just jam up completely and never move again? Seasons? We don't need no steenkin' seasons! Our four seasons are drought, flood, wind & fire, and rain. The rainy season lasts about about 3 days.

$300K for a free standing 2 bedroom apartment (here, they call that a house), so close to your neighbor's house that you can borrow a cup of sugar just by opening your window in any room.

No Wal-marts but we got Big K and Target.

Well, for my 3 cents worth, if you want the REAL sunshine state, come to Scottsdale, AZ. We enjoy more sunshine that that so-called sunshine state and this is considered the second Silicon Valley.

Real estate is not expensive and the climate is wonderful. Unemployment rate here is the best in the country.

We moved here 4 years ago from New York and will never go back. If you have any questions, let me know. I will be more then happy to help you out.

Chicken, I heard recently that traffic fatalities are down about 50% from last year in the L.A. area (or maybe statewide?). And that's not due to safer drivers but gridlock. People can't have accidents if they're not moving!

WeinBar, AZ was always high on my list. How are your golf courses?

You can't beat having all 4 seasons. It's so beautiful in Montreal right now. Leaves falling, fresh northern air, and the cost of living is probably the cheapest in North America. You can buy a beautiful home in a great neighbourhood for $200,000 (and that's Canadian Dollars = $135,000 USD).

My brother in law almost moved to Boston for a job but he couldn't get over the cost of living (average house was $300,000+ and that's US dollars. Ouch!)

And we have the best cable internet access around (no proxies) and DSL.

I must agree with Tabernack (though I'm puzzled as to why anyone would use one of the big 4 French swear words as their alias!) - Montreal in the Spring, Summer and Fall are to die for (though Winter is pretty yucky).

Beautiful francophone women, a gregarious mix of ethnics and races, cheap food and rent, Old Montreal... the closest you can get to Europe (besides Quebec City) without going there....

I like it so much I'm actually moving there next fall.

tabernack .. it's snowing here right now .. there is nothing fun about me going outside tomorrow morning at 6:00 AM to shovel the driveway :)

Anyway, 90% of my family lives in canada (heck.. I think only my mother and father live in Europe .. they love it here) .. anyway . I don't want to be near 90% of my family ;)

naaa, it would just be too much of an assle for me to move to Canada, I'm portuguese, I would have to go tru immigration and all the other legal factors, too bad, all my relatives reall love it up there :)

Carlos, I lived in places like Tennessee, Washington, DC, and New York City before moving to Carlsbad, California.

Carlsbad is a picturesque beach town about 30 miles north of San Diego. There is no traffic jams, no gangs, the people are friendly (well, a few of them do have that lost in space look) the weather is excellent, the beach is nice and clean, no hurricanes, and they do have high-speed connectivity, etc. And if you do need anything that you can't get in Carlsbad, you can surely find it in San Diego or LA (about 1.5 hrs). Not to mention all the great cheap vacations to Mexico which is only 1 hour away.

As for your wife, just tell her that she can have a little senorita taking care of all house chores for $100 per week!

Fortget the biblebelt, forget the rustbelt, southern CA is where it's at.

Where you should live depends on what you like and what job opportunities exist in that location for your field (If you're a farmer that is).

I've lived around Washington DC, Chicago, and in the middle of nowhere in Tennessee. I don't like some large cities due to traffic, and it is so hard to leave and return on weekends.
More remote places don't have enough technical jobs or shopping for my needs.

Ann Arbor is a nice small beautiful city (About 100,000) outside Detroit with nice shopping and many parks. I recommend it even though the real estate costs are fairly high, although lower than Chicago.

Your choice also depends on the weather you like and how close to water or mountains you would like to be. In Michigan, you have your choice of visiting the Great Lakes within about one to four hours drive, depending on where you would like to go. Also there are many small natural lakes all over the area.

South Bend Indiana is also a nice city with excellent low cost shoppng but not as many jobs. I also like San Diego and some areas in Washington state.

Good luck.
