what kind of line would you need to host one server with 500 or less accounts on it. t-1 t-3 etc? We have a small webhosting company would like to have the servers local. is this possible?

One simple suggestion.
500 is not a very small number except when you compare with guys like verio...
Also if you need to grow you need a fast connection. So my advice would be invest in it... the ROI would be very high...
I'm sure you'd be able to make the number of clients over 10000 very soon.....

Have a great day :)

It would depend on the features you include in each account, and the amount of bandwidth you allow for each account. If you want to have a line go to your house, it probably isn't the best idea. As well as the setup cost, you don't have backup generators if the power goes out, nor do you have the techs to fix the line if it breaks. I'd advise co-location.

Here is what I would do. Start off with a single T1 line. I am assuming that all of the sites are not getting pounded at the same time. Then with some ISP you can get what is called a "multi meg" or "bounded" T1. These can go up to 9Mb before you have to pay a DS3 loop. I would stat out that way. Need any help let me know.:stickout

last year, when i used jumpline.com very very briefly, i was told(by their phone support guy), that they have kept up to 800 of their lowest package accounts on one server. sheesh. i left them quick.

but yeah. 500 domains. low resource ones. you'd definately be good with investing in dual t1s or so at first (and the routers/etc/etc of course). which WILL get pricey. but, if you have the funds, go for it. then do the bounding deal that brently mentioned.

Getting private lines is dumb, unless you're planning on being huge. To just 500 sites it's silly to buy all the equipment etc. that a leased line requires, plus you'll be locked into (more than likely) a 3 yr contract.

Just go colo/dedicated.
