View Full Version : your experience with terabyte uptime?

hi all,

a friend whose website i'm designing decided to go with tera-byte for his hosting company. he chose them because they had such a good rep with customers and offered good plans.

since we moved the site onto the tera-byte server, we have been having outages practically every day, and more than once a day, sometimes for rather long periods (ranges from a few minutes to 15, 20, 30 minutes... we don't check all the time so we don't know for sure how often or how long it happens).

examples : cannot connect by ftp, cannot connect by ssh/telnet, cannot find webserver so cannot view webpages, that sort of thing.

their support techs have been good and responsive, but it doesn't change the problem of the outages. maybe it is a lemon server, maybe it is another customer who is running scripts that are crashing it, i don't know. they happen at all hours of the day - during working hours, around midnight, you never know when it's going to happen.

anyway it's been less than a week since we moved onto this server with this company and we've had these connection problems almost every day since the very first day. my friend is not very happy, needless to say, since it's his first experience with having a website and it's kind of important to him (business site, not personal). i was wondering if anyone else here has had a similar experience so far? (this is for shared hosting, by the way, and he bought one of the bigger plans)

hmmm, that's pretty weird. My website with tera-byte.com has had very good uptime.

(btw, it's not the site in my sig. because that site isn't even up yet.)

i just signed up for tera-byte last week and have had some server outages too, but nothing too serious. i am having trouble logging on to my ftp server right now tho... none the less, service so far has been pretty good, especially for the price... these problems seem minor, i hope they fix them quickly

Good support! I have had some downtime too, not too much though! Btw, when you say one of the bigger plans do you mean the plan 4, at $9.95 a month? Im moving to a dedicated soon. Shared hosting is just not reliable enough when it comes to business sites. If you can afford it, a low-end dedicated server at $99-300 is the least your business deserves if that's what you make your living off, IMHO.

Not sure personally, as I haven't used them. But, I thought I read something here that Chicken has a dedicated server or colo there, so I'm sure he'll post here when he comes on the forums next. :)

Well yes, I do, though it does seem to be a buggy server, or a problem with that individual server (users, etc.?). My experiences, in this case, doesn't apply.

we have another site at them , and often down (just for 5-15 mins) for 2, or 3 days . For short, 2, 3 times per week.

Lazy to come to chatroom to ask them (they know me well because I often come there to wake them up, hehe).

They are a large enough company that you will find quite a few people who are willing to say they have bad downtime, but the majority of their customers probably are quite happy with the service. Give them a try and find out for yourself, its the best way to go. Theyre definatly not the kind of host to just ignore a problem youre having so you wont be screwed if youre unhappy.

I believe that . Hope they get well.

Tera has a live chat support?

I would recommend contacting them and asking to be moved to a different server.

Yes, they have a live support . Use mirc, go to server irc.mircx.com , #tera-byte .

Terabyte is the father company of spaceports. And spaceports has chatroom there too .

thanks for all the input, guys! webuser's experience sounds the closest to ours. i didn't know there was a live chat support room either, thanks for that info!

my original advice to my friend was to give it a week and see if it gets any worse or if it continues with problems every day, and then to either move to a different company, or request to be moved to a different server.

having read your comments, i think we'll stick to that plan and, if the short outages continue, i'll suggest that he ask to be moved to a new server first and see if that works better. (so far it seems to be okay again today... fingers crossed!)

once again, thanks for all your replies :)
