i run proftpd on one of my servers, when i connect, my ftp client cuteftp shows "socket connected" but wait forever with no response from the server?

Try restarting it... I prefer PureFTPd over ProFTPd, as I find it to be *much* faster. However I think there are some incompatibilities with PureFTPd and ftp stats programs that are included with cPanel/WHM.

All the more reason to switch! If you have WHM, you can easily switch in your services list.
