This may sound like an odd question. Anyhow, I'm moving out of a dedicated server soon, and was wondering if there are any suggestions as to how to abandon it. For example, should I delete all my viewable content, change/delete my email account, or even run some command to format the harddrive? Is there any risk of the vendor (it's a respectable one) just handing my box to someone else without wiping out sensitive data first?
Thanks,
Pilgrim

I'ld be kind of pissed if I rented me a new dedicated server and found out it was full of old stuff :)
I think you can trust your vendor to make sure it looks as a brand new install before the rent it out again.
However I think it is still your responsibility to make sure that no sensitive information is left on the thing when you abandon it.
I.e. get rid of the creditcard databases and the password files. Your customers trusted you with that info and you shouldn't be careless with it. And definatly delete your email account. You don't know the ppl who work for your vendor. One of them just might do funny things with your email account ;)

Thanks Pilgrim. This is a personal server, so I won't be comprimising anyone's data but my own :)
Ok, since I'm a linux newbie, just thought I'd ask a couple related questions. What's the command to change an email account (aka user)'s password? And to delete it altogether?
Thanks much,
Chicken

rm -rf /
That will get rid of a good amount of stuff, though I don't know how to do it perm.ly

Yeah, that's the way I delete email accounts too.
I want an "rm -rf/osama" t-shirt.

rm -rf/osama* does not make any sense and is not a valid command. :D :D :D
