Does anybody have experience of using a US based reseller account? I am UK based and the rates offered by the US host's seem fairly attractive when compared to current UK pricing (+ VAT)
I have used a number of UK host's and re-seller plans and some have been fantastic others are not even worthy of the name 'host'
Here is a list with a brief description regarding the service etc:
Virtual Names - http://www.virtualnames.co.uk - Run by a chap called Robert Harvey this is the first account I ever used. The prices are very fair and the service has always been fantastic, they specialise more in domain registrations and would be more suitable for small companies or individuals. He doesnt offer reseller facilities but will pay commisions on domains registered by referals etc. Well worth checking out...
Portland - http://www.portland.co.uk - A victim of it's own success? Portland were (and still are) as far as I know the only UK host to offer a FREE account, you can transfer in your own domain or use a subdomain of theirs. They offer 1 MySQL DB, CGI and PHP4 support. The service at times though has been un usable especially FTP, they do though seem to have started to get there act together now though with a number of new premium services appearing. The good thing about Portland though is the difficulties you will experience setting up a site on thier servers will ensure your web testing and scripting skills are up to date....
Pay-as-you-host - http://www.pay-as-you-host.com - They offer a standard and a reseller package. The beaty of their system though is you can 'rollover' bandwith allowance and purchase more space/bandwith as you need it. They charge £3.99 per month (ex VAT for all us lucky Brits) for the standard: 50MB Unix Webspace ¦ 512 MB Transfer plus CGI / PHP etc, they offer a fantastic level of service to even helping to configure any scripts you are running. The re-seller account is £21.99 PM and you get unlimited domains/control panel for customers etc. You can assign webspace/bandwith to customers as you wish so flexibilty is there.
Cheapnames - http://www.cheapnames.co.uk - These are the WORST co that I have ever used (admittedly a while back). I have recently seen another of their adverts offering:
100MB ¦ 20 Pop e-mail (unlimited alias) ¦ CGI ¦ FTP ¦ and UNRESTRICTED bandwith (yep that old chesnut) and Graphical Statistics WOW this is the 'Premier' package and it cost's £149 (+ VAT) per year. This may seem reasonable to some people (not sure who though) the best bit is this they have the cheeck to charge £30 (+VAT) for PHP and the same for MySQL thats + another £60 (+VAT) folks for open source. YES YOU DID JUST READ THIS RIGHT  for all of you who may have just fallen of your chairs.
Doubless to say I will not be using their services again
I am not affiliated with any of these site's apart from as a customer, an honest and fair opinion is what most of the post's on this site seek so here you have one (hopefully)
