Hi all,

I noticed some companies offer remote reboot port for dedicated server uers.

But I have a question, I can reboot the server at command line, or I can reboot the server inside webmin. So what's the point of remote reboot port?

Well when your server "hangs" you won't be able to access it through http or telnet/ssh

A remote rebootport operates independ from your server. It's basially an on/off switch for the power to your server.

Thanks.

But it rarely hangs for Linux. Only if it really run out of memory. I think the remote reboot port my not worth for it in some situation.

It depends if you have a datacenter reliable enough that will reboot your server as soon as you call - it also depends on how mission critical your service is.

Oh, I'm being hosted by Rackshack. It's worth it. Trust me ;)

True it doesn't hang that often. Happened to me 1 time during the last 4 months.

But when your datacenter does not have someone there 24/7 and your server decides to take a break at 6 PM (one hr after the colo ppl left) and they tell you someone will reboot your server at tenish the next morning you generally do not feel to happy about that.

In fact there is no way to describe the many emotions you go through at that moment :(

No, I now GLADLY pay for a reboot switch.

If you have hardware failure or some software problem that make you can't reboot. Even if you have a remote reboot port, it won't help, right?

But yes, if your datacenter don't have 24 hours tech, it's better to have a port like that.

I would rather have someone available 24/7 instead of a reboot reboot device because they can troubleshoot problems better :)
