View Full Version : is there a fundamental flaw in GMAIL's invite system?
websterworld 05-27-2004, 06:58 AM you get an invite to signup for Gmail. you register an account.
after a few days you can send one or two invites yourself to other people. if you report a bug, you get a few more invites.
ebay has already Gmail invites for sale as you all know, from 45$ to 120$. in order to get a good name registered before Gmail is released to the public people are willing to pay.
am I the only one who sees a flaw?
I get an invite for Gmail after a few days I can invite 2 people. (if I report a bug, I can invite more) I send the invites to 2 other emails I own. now I have 3 Gmail accounts. and after a few days I can invite 4 people... do that again, and I have 7 Gmail accounts, and can invite 8 people. again? now I have 15 Gmail accounts, and can invite 16 people. lets do that again... now I have 31 Gmail accounts and can invite 32 people. again? now I have 63 Gmail accounts and can invite 64 people. last time. now I have 127 Gmail accounts and can invite 128 people.
If I can sell the invites on ebay for 50$ each (probably more) I make about 6K from this. I also have 127 prime Gmail names registered that people are willing to pay even more for...
so in about 6 times (a month maybe?) I made 10K and have a Gmail account.
hmmm, not bad.
am I missing something?
because if I didnt, I now REALLY want a Gmail invite. anyone? I did make you smile, be a buddy and invite me. :D
Fatty 05-27-2004, 07:15 AM Well you are right I think. If you look on ebay you will see the same seller flogging dozens of them. :)

nice little market, aint it? :D
well I think I *ahem* deserve something for my discovery.
if anybody has an invite send it my way: eugene[@]websterworlds.com
apparently if you cash in on the flaw I found in this you can make a few hundred easly.
Fatty 05-27-2004, 07:21 AM Well, I should have said. I have had an account for about 4 days and have not recieved any invites. Though I did report 2 bugs this morning so who knows...

in theory you should receive a few invites this week.
in theory I made you, and whoever reads this post a sum of money.
in theory somebody should invite me, out of curtsy.
:stickout:
Fatty 05-27-2004, 07:31 AM Well you can curtsy if you like but I will show you no courtesy ;-)
I'll be sure to remember your plan should I be showered with invites :)

really nice of you.
so basically, if I'm right you make a nice amount of cash... and yet, you wont spare me one invite. lets say you get 2invites (you should get more) you can give one to me, and start again. its only a few days delay... but noooooo, you will do the selfish thing.
Fatty 05-27-2004, 07:40 AM Hehe yes life is hard. :-)
In all seriousness I wonder if they will give out anymore. I have a blog too and never got one there, though it is not exactly active.
I picked up the domain mygmail.net as well thought I might put up a little forum to discuss the privacy thing etc, but I have had second thoughts as I think might be issues with trademarks etc.
websterworld 05-27-2004, 07:45 AM dont think so. first of all its a .net, and your not trying to hurt Gmail, your not a competitor. (you dont offer free email) you just want to start a discussion forum about it, its perfectly fine I would think. worst thing that could happen is you get an email from google saying they like the domain and want to buy it for some token fee. (or not token fee if your lucky)
Fatty 05-27-2004, 07:50 AM Yeah, well that is true. I might set it up this week if I get some time. Too much to do! :)

busy times... you know what will help you feel better about yourself? put a smile on your face? knowing that life has meaning by helping a fellow man? (I'll give you 3 guesses)
Fatty 05-27-2004, 07:58 AM LOL, well persistance pays off they say. Lets wait and see if they give me any :-)
I think it will be in beta a while, could be wrong but some weird bugs still.

SWHospital 05-27-2004, 08:37 AM Please send a Gmail invite to Tech@SoftwareHospital.com ... anybody... DO IT... DO IT NOW..
websterworld 05-27-2004, 08:44 AM erm, stand in line buddy. :stickout:
I actually doubt I'll get one here, but you never know.
anyway, this is really getting :topic:
so what did the google guys think when they set this up? its flawed... opinions?
Knogle 05-27-2004, 08:46 AM I don't think they expected the account to sell on eBay at the first place. ;)
websterworld 05-27-2004, 08:51 AM yes, but they could have anticipated people wanting to register the better names before its out of beta. so if somebody wants a few good names, he can just invite himself to them.
Fatty 05-27-2004, 08:57 AM Well they have partly you have to have names more than 5 characters long.
I reckon they must be pretty happy with the ebay thing, good press builds hype. Plus the invite system is what they are pushing on their community thing as well.
But I noticed webmaster (i think), administrator ;-) and some others were taken. I settled for newsdesk to take image submissions and such on a new site.
Will be interesting to see what happens when it goes public. I noticed someone in here said their friend at Google Uk thought people were in a for a nasty, regards re-registering....

You are really missing the big picture. Mortage your house and take a loan. Buy up all the gmail account on Ebay or elsewhere by offering the highest bids. Start replicating the account by sending the invites to all your accounts thereby creating millions of gmail accounts.[I am sure you would have bugged a lot of people in Google so they will permit you to create as many accounts as you want] Now you have created a huge demand vs supply crisis situation where you have absolute control. Up the price to about 1000 US$ per account minimum bid and with the money you make start buying up Google shares when they are listed. After you take control of 51% of the stocks you are the boss of Google.
Neat huh ?
:D
KIA-Joe 05-27-2004, 10:40 AM If anyone knows how to create a buzz it's google. I wouldn't be surprised if they are putting up eBay auctions themselves for gmail invites ...

our mind follows the same patterns buddy :D
KIAHost, I doubt its actually google putting the invites at Ebay... I actually think they are not very happy with that.
Yea I'm sure google will probably stop giving invites or open it up to the public soon anyways..
I would really like a gmail account though, if any one could help me out jimmy at thetruth com I would appreciate it greatly! I'll send back any invite codes I get to the person if thats what they want... I just want a new email without all the popups and banners. Thanks!!
chrisranjana 05-28-2004, 12:20 AM I really believe the best way to test the waters is to go live. Yes a few bugs will crop up here and there but doesn't all applications have bugs in the early stage of development !
Steven 05-28-2004, 12:45 AM thats really interesting

If only it was that easy.. Until you realize that you have just bought everything up, and at the same time Gmail comes out of beta goes public and free email...
Either that or it backfires and all beta accounts get canceled when the final version is ready..

Google will eventually have plenty of ads to cover the costs. If you want a ad free email account try Novell's MyrealBox 10MB account. Sometimes it will be down for service cos its really a test site but is allowed for anyone to create accounts and its ok for personal use. No spamming allowed though.

Heh, myself and one of my friends were discussing this earlier today. I'd laugh if they started fresh when it goes live.
TBergman 05-29-2004, 03:12 AM I find this quite interesting, how far a person would go in order to get a GMail account.
*looks around*, If anyone has any extra invites please send one to : troyb@alliance4.us :D (much apreciated)
Thanks,
~TAB
ronnie4581 06-05-2004, 09:08 PM Your logic is wrong on this. When you get a GMAIL account they dont automatically give out GMAIL invites. Its all random. Also they dont give you an invite for alerting them of bugs. Its all just random on when/how they give out invites.
nickn 06-05-2004, 09:29 PM :snip:
Amish_Geek 06-06-2004, 01:20 AM Interesting... you want someone to give you an invite so that you can make $6k in a month.. Why dont you just invest the $45 and buy an invite on ebay? I'd say it would be a worthy investment if you are so sure you can make $6k in a month doing that.
websterworld 06-06-2004, 08:45 AM amish_geek, was just idle speculation, I highly doubt it can work out like that. was more of a joke then anything. :D
plugged 06-06-2004, 04:34 PM You're wrong. Completely wrong. Don't make up theories if you have no idea what you're talking about.
I've had a gmail account for approximately 3 weeks. 20mb of email stored already. 1 bug reported. Three friends of mine have had gmail accounts for 2 weeks. One of them reported a bug.
None of us have any invites. I'm not complaining.
If I get invites added to my account and can't find anyone who wants one, I certainly won't be inviting you.

If I recall correctly, isn't a theory just speculation which is not based purely on facts? It seems as this is the case here if he was 100% accurate about what he was saying it would be a law, but it isn't. That is why it is a theory, and that is why you should calm down.
