View Full Version : cari.net and cogent question
bustacap 05-26-2004, 03:39 PM Hi, I'm kind of new to this. I am looking at cari.net who says they give you a 10mb port with every managed server. I emailed them, and they say that they put one machine per 10mb port.
They also said, you can either get that 10mb with cogent, or 1 mb with cogent/williams, it is my choice.
What is better, say, for servers that will have many bandwidth intensive connections (game servers): 10mbps of cogent, or 1mbps of cogent/williams?

Kind of like asking if you want a 2 cylinder engine versus an 8 cylinder engine... although, none of those connections would be considered a V8.
Go with the 10mb cogent if all you need it for is downloads. For games, I am not sure which one is the better network.

bustacap 05-26-2004, 04:14 PM Thanks for the reply.
The 10mb would be better because each connection to a CS game server requires ~56kb, and if I had 17 connections (approximately) and was using the 1mbps, it would take up nearly the whole connection -- I'll go with the 10mbps.
Joshua 05-26-2004, 04:17 PM The 10Mbps option would be better for what you need. I rate Williams as a lower quality provider than Cogent due to my experiences with their overloaded peering points and poor routing across the country, so I don't see why they'd cut the bandwidth by 10 times by adding BGP.

bhalsted 05-26-2004, 04:32 PM We used cari.net colo (http://www.sdcolo.com/index.html) for a long time and never had any problems. Their building is sitting on top of and across the parking lot from the different internet connection switches. They always answered the phone even at 3am. If I was going to manage our own hardware again I'd go back to them.
Cheers,
Ben
UmBillyCord 05-26-2004, 06:10 PM bustacap, you need to understand a few things about how they are setup. We have been users for years. Their support is the best we have found. But their network is below average, both in terms of quality providers and in redundancy. Most DCs will give you a tour so you can see the core routers, etc.... They do not. They completely dropped Level(3) and Verio without telling a single customer. So take that for what it is worth.
10 Meg Cogent is single homed and it does go down. Offering a single connection to the Internet is not smart business. But if your life does not depend on it and can suffer some slower routes or complete outages for a few minutes or more every once in a while, then it will work fine.
WilTel/Cogent 1 Meg. This is their "Premium" bandwidth offer. Just using two of the lowest priced backbones round to provide redundancy.
illogix 05-26-2004, 07:01 PM Wow, that is so premium :D
I would take the 10mb cogent as I also rate WCG very poor so I don't think a WCG/Cogent mix is worth 10 times single homed Cogent.
So for the value, I would definitely pick 10mb Cogent.
ReliableServers 05-27-2004, 12:01 AM cogent 10megs or cogent/wiltel 1meg.....considering neither network is of great quality, just get the cogent10meg for the price.
WII-Aaron 05-27-2004, 11:52 AM As for Williams, I can say that we have had some issues with latency, however, I would not class them as "Low Quality". I've found thier connections to be good and as far as service, they are second to none. Thier engineers and technicians are the most competant of any company I've used. They bent over backwards to bail me out of a bad situation. I've never had a problem where I didn't feel like they were all scrambling to take care of me.
Also, I disconnected my Williams connection one day to run some failover tests on another provider. Within 5 minutes 2 different Williams techs had called me to let me know there was a problem and they were working to find out what it was. I felt sorry for them when I had to tell them the problem was me unplugging it. Still. Great service.

Notice I did not say WilTel was "low quality". I stated the overall CariNet network is. And this is in comparison to the competition in San Diego. When you compare a WilTel/Cogent blend to what the competition has in SD, it certainly is low quality.
