I got this from Cox today.

Dear Cox @ Home Customer:

As you know from our previous emails, Excite @ Home, our vendor in delivering
your Cox @ Home service, filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection at the end
of September. We have endeavored to keep you informed of the potential impact this Bankruptcy could have on your Cox @ Home service and are writing to you
today to provide the latest information we have available.

First, we want you to know that we are committed to providing you uninterrupted
high speed Internet service. Cox Communications has been working diligently in
negotiations with Excite @ Home and using all legal avenues available to protect
you, our valued customer. Meanwhile, we have been forging ahead with our
plans to deliver reliable high speed Internet service to you on our Cox-managed
network. You will soon be receiving additional information about our new Cox
High Speed Internet(sm) service, along with information to help you convert to this
new service.

The latest developments with Excite @ Home:

This month, Excite @ Home’s creditors petitioned the Bankruptcy court with a
motion to allow Excite @ Home to terminate service agreements with its cable
affiliates on November 30th. This includes agreements with Cox, Comcast and
AT&T. If the Court grants the creditors’ request, there conceivably could be a
temporary disruption in the services that Excite @ Home provides to
approximately 3.7 million customers served by its North American cable affiliates.
We are doing everything possible to see that there will not be a disruption in your
service, but also want you to understand the possibilities and to be prepared:

*If the Judge’s ruling states that Excite @ Home may terminate its service
agreements with Cox and the other cable affiliates, this does not mean that
Excite @ Home will automatically turn off the service on November 30th. *With the Judge’s approval, Excite @ Home would then have the ability to make
a decision on termination; however, we are negotiating with them to prevent any
service disruption.
*If Excite @ Home decides to terminate service despite our efforts to negotiate a
temporary arrangement, the question remains as to when the service would be
terminated. We are doing everything we can to ensure that your Cox @ Home
service continues until we can transition you to our new Cox-managed Internet
service. In short, we are doing our best to make sure that you will never be
without high speed Internet service.

Additional help Cox is providing:

In addition to exercising legal avenues, negotiating with Excite @ Home, and
building our own high speed Internet service, Cox is also offering the following to
help you and to keep you informed during this transitional period:

· Toll Free Customer Information Line (1-877-832-4751). You can call in for
the latest updates as we work to quickly resolve any service issues.
· Website Message Center at Cox.com/info
We will provide online updates and a "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQ) section to
address your concerns.
· Automatic Account Credits. We will credit your account automatically for
service and leased equipment so that you are reimbursed for any time you
are without service.
· Free, temporary dial-up Internet access. In the unlikely event that you
should experience a service disruption, we have arranged for temporary
dial-up access to the Internet via NetZero(R). In order to take advantage of
this precautionary option, please see the "What Should I be Doing Right
Now" section that follows.

Cox has a long history of outstanding service in your community. We pride
ourselves on providing high quality products and the best customer service.
Please know that we are committed to our customers and understand the
extent to which you enjoy the services we provide. We recognize that you
have a choice in service providers and we will continue to do our best to
remain your choice now and in the future. In advance, we apologize for any
inconvenience that the Bankruptcy of our vendor Excite @ Home may cause
you.

Stay tuned for more details, and thank you for choosing Cox.

Sincerely,

The Cox High-Speed Internet Team
Cox Communications, Inc.

What Should I be Doing Right Now?
1. Check your Cox @ Home email daily. Opened messages will be saved
automatically to your hard drive.
2. Download free dial-up Internet software. In the unlikely event that Excite
@ Home terminates your service, you would lose connectivity to the Internet and
access to your Cox @ Home services such as email and webspace. We do not
recommend that you install the software at this time, just download the software
and save it so that it may be installed should you have an interruption in service.
In order to restore access to the Internet and to set up a temporary email
address, we recommend that you register for dial-up service via NetZero and
download the necessary software. You will not be able to download the software
from your home after your Internet service has already been disrupted. While a
free dial-up connection is not ideal, it will give you temporary access to the
Internet for surfing, making transactions, etc. However, you will not be able to
access your Cox @ Home email accounts while the service is shut down. For
information on how to download this software, please visit Cox.com/info
3. Back up your personal web page to your hard drive or to a CD. (This is a
good precautionary measure to follow at any time.)
4. In the unlikely event that there is a disruption in service, keep your cable
modem connected to your PC until service is restored.
5. Watch for more information from Cox on the transition of your service to
Cox High Speed Internet. At such time that you can make the transition to our
new service, Cox will be providing you with all of the information you need to make
your transition as smooth as possible.

I honestly doubth @Home will disconnect it's network, since it would more then likely just be digging themselves a deeper hole. However if they do, it would be intresting to see the cable industry 6 month down the line, when many of the smaller and more local providers try to step up and fill @Home's void.

I read something that a few providers are doing what they can to keep there customers online. Of course I havent heard anything about my provider. If anyone has heard anything about MediaCom keeping there @home customers online, I would be greatful :D Otherwise I guess I will see at 2am. I sure dont want to have ot go back to Dialup. I love my cable modem.

Wonder if AOL/Time Warner, or the county would mind if I drag 10 miles of coax cable from my brothers place :D He has a router.

But there are only 40 customers in my area that have cable modem access through @home, so I dont think we are as much of a concern as other places.

Hmm. Interesting that they won't offer dial up services, temporarily (cox)

It would be funny to see hundreds of people just drop offline at once

I mean, its not funny for the people affected, I know, im sorry, but just imagine that...

crazy stuff.

Well it's 12:01 and we're still alive. I'm on Cox in Las Vegas, but I don't believe they use @home here.

I did notice that last weekend I was getting a ton of dropped packets (since fixed), and since then when I do a traceroute almost everything goes through Chicago (on epoch.net), even stuff on the west coast. My servers are about 10 miles away from my office, and to trace them it goes from Las Vegas to Chicago, then Salt Lake City and back to Las Vegas.

I hope Cox hangs in there because we can't get DSL where I am. Looks like I may have to spring for that T1 line into my house.

heh AT&T lost their contract with @Home and no longer using @Home Service.

Here what I read from Yahoo! News:

ExciteAtHome Unplugs AT&T Net, Others Online
By Peter Henderson and Jim Christie

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Bankrupt high-speed Internet provider ExciteAtHome Corp (ATHMQ.OB). shut its network to 850,000 AT&T Corp. (NYSE:T - news) customers on Saturday but said it was still in talks with other cable companies on a new service deal.

In a game of brinkmanship, AT&T, which also wants to buy Excite, said it had already moved about 10 percent of its AtHome customers to its own Broadband service and had no set plan to resume talks on a new service deal.

Some AT&T users would be without service for up to 10 days.

Excite, which says it needs a new deal to make a profit and could also use an agreement as leverage in sales negotiations, continued talks with other cable companies who serve the rest of the 3.7 million AtHome network customers in North America.

``After determining that it would not be able to reach agreement with AT&T, the company terminated service to AT&T,'' Excite said.

Confused AtHome subscribers found their way on the Internet, including some bitter AT&T customers. One from Sammamish, Washington wrote on the DSLReports.com broadband Web site that AT&T would not cancel a one-year contract without penalties.

``They, AT&T, should be held accountable. Who do they think they are?'' the subscriber wrote.

WANTS TO BUY EXCITE

AT&T Corp has been in talks to buy the 77 percent of Excite it does not own at the same time as its AT&T Broadband unit and other cable companies have been negotiating a new Excite service deal, which would raise the value of Excite.

Some analysts have said this made AT&T Broadband less willing to sign a new agreement.

Other cable companies also may be more eager to reach a deal with Excite because they have no fallback that would be ready soon, while AT&T has been building a backup network.

A spokeswoman for Cox Communications Inc (NYSE:COX - news). one of the other AtHome cable providers, said talks with Excite resumed around 1 p.m. EST (1800 GMT) on Saturday.

``I think they're going well. We're still up and running. If the talks weren't going well, if they felt we weren't negotiating in good faith, that wouldn't be the case,'' she said.

But an attorney for Excite bondholders said talks were moving slowly. ``Money cures all problems. The problems aren't cured yet,'' said William Weintraub. ``From the bondholders' perspective, things have to happen very quickly.''

Judge Thomas Carlson of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in San Francisco paved the way for the shutdown, ruling on Friday that bankrupt ExciteAtHome, in order to renegotiate a better deal, could unplug customers.

EXCITE LOSING MONEY

Excite says it is losing money providing the service at current rates. It gets an estimated $16 of the roughly $46 monthly fee subscribers pay to partner cable companies.

AT&T owns about 23 percent of Excite and wants to buy the remaining 77 percent for $307 million, which bondholders say is not enough to pay off more than $1 billion in Excite debt.

Excite has about 45 percent of the cable modem users in North America, and other high-speed services have begun offering deals to defectors.

AT&T said it had already migrated some 86,000 customers in Oregon and Washington to an AT&T Broadband service and would move remaining customers within 10 days.

``We're deeply concerned what this impact might have on our existing customer base and on potential customers,'' said AT&T Broadband spokesman Andrew Johnson. But ``certainly it can't be lost that we are doing our best efforts to try and restore the service as quickly as possible.''

There was still a chance for new talks but nothing had been lined up, he said. ``We don't have anything formally scheduled at the moment, but we continue to keep the door open to talk with them.''

I just came here to vent on that. This was such bs. Mainly I am just mad there was no call made, since I do not use their email, not sure if a email was sent to there. Yep, Saterday morning it didnt work. First I waited. Then tried that unplug/plug back in deal they have you do. Then I waited. Then I waited some more. Then I called, sorry, we have closed service, etc, you will be down for around 7 days. I honestly do not care about the being credited part, I care that I no longer had a modem and had to go buy one. BTW, what I find funny, is that about three weeks ago They had everyone switch from the Mediaone Network to the @home, now they shutdown.

I'm with Rogers @Home in Canada... Last week, they switched everyone over to @rogers.com e-mail addresses instead of @home.com addresses. And they've also set up their own broadband network and can supposedly switch over in a few hours if @Home decides to cut their connection. I thought what we're having to deal with up here is a hassle...but it's nothing compared to what others may have to go through with days of no access if their providers haven't made other arrangements! Yikes!

Yep... Luckily all accounts in my area get switched to adelphia.net, and we shouldn't have any downtime.

That does suck how they just drop you like that. Luckily I just happened to be in the right area.
