How many of you speak english as a second language?
And what is your original or native language.

You know you should have English on the list because English is my native language

Just for your record, since I was 10, I can listen to 7 languages. On my 15th, 9 languages, and now, I can listen to 11 languages (and probably more, can't keep count).

cheers,

You can hear them, not listen. To listen is to be able to understand what you are hearing.

To listen implies not just passively hearing, but making an effort or having the intent to hear something. Whether you comprehend it doesn't matter.

You certainly can listen to people speaking a language you don't understand.

but in the way dektong used the word that is the way it was used. He can listen to them and understand part of it.

But this is a thread targetted at those to whom English is a second language; I couldn't let your clearly stated yet inaccurate definition stand!

You don't have Vietnamese on there. I was born in the States but they made me take ESL when I entered elementary school. But now I'm fluent in tieng anh nhung ma em khong biet tien Viet :D

Scratch that, didn't see the "Other" option. This is what happens when you lose one contact lense.

listen v. 1. Give ones attention to a sound. 2. Make an attempt to hear.

No mention of understanding there.

I'm thinking that would kinda defeat the purpose of an ESL thread. (English as a SECOND language...) :D

True, but you should still at least list American. It is probably the most common first language of ESLers.

My native language is Farsi (Persian (Iran)). I've grown up in Sweden (which means I can easily talk to and understand people from Denmark and Norway) and offcourse that makes my second language Swedish. I'm also very good with English (lived in US in the past and have had English as second language in school). I've also studied German for 3 years.
