I find this rather rude and horrible marketing considering the called the phone number on the tech support who is

Has anyone encountered this and if im right is it legal to obtain phone numbers from a who is and proceed to make telemarketing calls from that number ?

I know its illegall to go threw the phone book and solicit isnt this along the same lines

As far as I know there is nothing illegal about it. By registering your business with your state or locality you get put into a database. I get calls every now and then, and they're not on the phone number I advertise but the one I gave the state when I filed.

I actually got a deceptive one who pretended to be someone interested in my service but the first thing she asked (without even saying hello) was "Do you accept credit cards there?". When I said we did she said ok and was about to hang up. When I asked her where she'd seen our number (since the line she called is not advertised or listed) she said a friend gave it to her. When I explained to her that wasn't possible and asked if this was a sales call she simply hung up.

I have no problem with people wanting to offer me services, but I'd prefer they be honest about their intentions, and as MarcD pointed out, accept "no" for an answer without making me get rude. :)

When I was working for a local computer shop, if we thought we would get telemarketers calling us because of the info we gave up, we'd put the first name as Tim. That way when people call and ask for Tim, which there wasn't an employee named Tim, we knew it was a marketer. So then I'd pick up and have some fun with'em.....

They used to call back and ask for a manager saying that Tim was rude to them on the phone, and the boss was the one that thought up the Tim idea, so he would have a good laugh..

Yes i dont have a problem with sales call but the number they called was a tech # from the who is
that number is only listed on who is and give out in signed contracts as customer emergency contact #'s
I was actually enjoying a nice movie with a big bowl of lucky charms in my underwear when that ring came threw and thought uh ho.

i usually dont handle purchasing or stuff like that our canadian number does that.

Lmao@tim im wondering if we should start doing that

Hey big fella! Too much information!! :D

I agree though. Even general solicitation is starting to get on my nerves. As a designer I stopped emailing people 'coldcall' about a year ago due to the feeling people were getting tired of being advertised too all the time. As a part of a hosting co we rely on a lot of word of mouth, and some banner ads, but wouldn't even think of cold calling anymore. People have had enough...

my favorite is when dialtone internet sent me spam asking me to get a dedicated server with them, and when i didnt reply they followed up with a call to my office and left a voicemail, asking me to call them about one of their great deals, you can clearly tell from my voicemail what we do, i was astounded their sales people were so stupid...

Well sir, maybe they can offer you much *better* services :D

I guess telemarketer types need to try anything on the off chance it'll lead to a sale, even as remote as trying someone who's obviously going to not want to hear about it

What I REALLY hate is when telemarketing people call me at my office. It goes through the secretary, but they often ask for me by name so she thinks I know them.

I get between 10-20 friggin Oracle or some crap marketing company call me a week.

Usual question..

Q: Does your company have any E-Commerce plans at present?
A: No - we don't see it as profitable.
Q: Any in the future?
A: No.
Caller: Thank you sir, that is all.

Now, if I replied yes then the call would last 20mins!

I really hate them.

Another one is Double Glazing salesmen - One company in the UK called Zenith Windows use to keep on calling us.
We made a complaint to the police in the end saying they were harrassing us.
It was about 3 times a week we got the call.

And another thing... Security salesmen calling around your home. It makes you think if they are scoping out the place to see how easy they can break in and make u 'invest' in security systems for the home.
