Hey guys,

This message goes to anyone interested in reseller hosting accounts.

You might want to take a look at OLM (Online Marketing).

When you do talk with someone from OLM - or any of the companies that offer reseller accounts for that matter - ensure they back up databases. If they don't you have to back up databases for your clients manually (for this you should charge extra)

Usually you get what you pay for but with OLM you get a bit more.

Support is very big in reseller plans so if you are going to offer it whether it is by phone or by a ticket system it must be there.

Establish who your target marget is (people working 8 -5 and don't full around with their web site at odd hours) or webmasters that need you "NOW!"

Whoever your clients are make sure they know what they are getting since misunderstandings can cause HUGE problems and create a bad rep.

Also consider clients with E-commerce web sites (you better make sure you back up their database and the server doesn't croak during critical moments...busy hours)...

For our E-commerce site (still at its infancy) kltoner dot com, we have to back up the database ourselves. If the server croaked we'd lose a lot of sales and if our database was lost we'd have to spend a few thousand dollars to re-build it. Who would we blame? Well since I've been in the hosting industry a while back I wouldn't blame anyone but ourselves. BUT if the client was someone else then they might blame you, the reseller, for loss of sales and whatever else....

Also, remember that if some of your clients are webmasters and working on something specific at late nights they'll be pretty upset if they can't get you on the phone for support.

At any rate I can write for hours but be careful with what you are getting yourself into! On a side note the servers we are using for our own sites are through pair networks.

My two cents worth...Cheers!

I didn't really understand your post at all. Are you recommending OLM or just warning people about backing up mysql?

Agreed it is unusual to see such a post especially from a new guy. I think it is a general warning/advice to new resellers planning to enter the market.

NexDog:

Yes to both and then some.

My recommendation of OLM is based on a personal experience as a former hosting reseller.

The rest of the post can be considered as a few pointers that new resellers should take into account.

Cheers!

P.S. good guess pixel :)

My 9yr old son keeps bugging me to allow him to setup a webhosting business, but I have put my foot down! He had to wait until he's at least 12. :D
