I have a question about picking up expired domain. Yesterday I noticed that a domain I would be interested in expires in a couple of weeks (mid-December). It is registered through Melbourne IT and the current owner is in the UK. The nameserver entries indicate that the domain is for sale, but I'm not willing to pay somoene more than a few bucks for it.
My question is, if the registration is not renewed next month, when is the soonest that the domain might become available again? Do different registrars hold expired domains for different amounts of time before releasing them?

If it is Network Solutions then you won't be able to register that domain for at least 6 months after it expires.

It's with Melbourne IT. Anyone out there know how they handle expiring domains?
Thanks.

Most of the registrars free the domain only after a few months...
Have a great day :)

If you want to spend the money and take a chance, there is something like snapdomains.com, which tries to take the domain after it expires. But no matter what they keep your money even if the person renews it, and I heard that, though am not sure on, that if multiple people try to snap the domain from that service, only one person gets it and everyone pays. So read everything through.

You meant snapnames.com, right?

No, with snapnames, if someone renews then you can transfer your money ($50 I think) to watch another account.
I have done this a few times, and am currently sitting on a domain which expired in august :(
Come on NETSOL!!! :(

Check out http://www.registerfly.com
They have this thing called "ExpireFish" that will monitor and grab domains when they become available. Works well, I've snagged a few good ones that way myself.

Thanks MystiX
I will put them on my list.
Do you know their % rate of grabbing domain names successfully?

The domain could be released in 6 weeks to 16 months depending on the wind direction. I'm using snapnames for a couple domains that expired in April, if I'm lucky I'll get em before January 1st
