View Full Version : Any Recommendations for a Free Shopping Cart?
chinpakt 11-29-2001, 03:13 AM Hi all,
Would like to enquire if any of you have come across a shopping cart that offers:
1. database connectivity with mySQL.
2. unlimited shopping items.
3. linkages (APIs) to enable online payment.
4. able to run on Linux.
Thanks for al the help...

I havent seen many carts that have these features and work well/ look deceent. Akopia (interchange) is the most powerful free cart but requires a great deal of knowladge and server power, its also not good for a small cart but may work if your ready to take the dive.
There are however a grerat many carts at hotscripts.com and cgi-resoruces.com that are cheap or free with less features. In truth, if you want a cart of this level, you may want to find a host that includes one or be ready to pay for a good one yourself.
netsolutions 11-29-2001, 03:20 AM Check out www.hotscripts.com
chinpakt 11-29-2001, 03:27 AM Thanks for the info.
Many regards.
Jedito 11-29-2001, 03:46 AM We use http://theexchangeproject.org instead Akopia or Agora, I don't like any of those.
Is pretty easy to install, stable and nice :)
bobcares 11-30-2001, 04:43 PM Hi!
http://www.commerce-cgi.com/ is a neat solution.
It has all the features that you have mentioned.
Have a great day :)

akashik 12-01-2001, 02:20 AM you can try http://www.phpshop.org too. The default install is as ugly as sin but it's possible the easiest cart to modify:
http://www.ariaswebcreation.com/phpshop_help/phpshop/Phpshop_0.6.x_Customization_Manual
has a walkthrough to modifying almost ever part of it, which can be done in Dreamweaver. (or any other html editor)
TEP is good but I had more than a few troubles with getting it to modify easily.
Akopia (Redhat Interchange) is nasty. I tried to modify that and got nowhere. It's also built into your control panel and was still hard to work with. Manual install of it reads like rocket science.

Anyone have the documentation bundle for InterChange? It appears strange that the shopping cart is free for as advanced and professional looking it is/can be, but charging for the documentation vs. the software - I have never seen such.
akashik 12-01-2001, 02:38 AM Anyone who's spent much time with RedHat will know that that's the way they do business. They offer the product for free, and provide avenues for people to develop a community, but support costs.
It's not bad as I see it. You get the product for free, can work it out amongst your peers, but if you need their help directly then you pay for it - open source with a catch :D
At the end of the day someone had to step up and make Linux a viable commercial model so redhat did.
As a shopping cart it's not so hot. It's very bulky to handle all the variations people may require, and it's mightly difficult to modify

addaction 12-01-2001, 02:53 AM I disagree.
Interchange is a very good and professional cart. It can handle all e-commerce applications you can think of.
Also Redhat charges only for the documentation in print (they have to pay the printer as well). All the documentation they have in print is also FREELY available on their website in PDF format. ( http://interchange.redhat.com/cgi-bin/ic/dev-4.8/index.html )
Don't expect too much from these guides if you don't already have some knowledge of Interchange, which you can only acquire by working with it.

Thanks for the link.... I was curious the documentation was, hence for the post of my message. I can always establish the documentation in print... don't care much about the little screenshots or what nots.
:)
All the best...

Jedito 12-06-2001, 02:31 PM Agora now comes with Cpanel
DON'T EVEN TRY CommerceSQL!
That is the worst script that I ever saw!
It load the server from 0.59 to 10 in seconds!!

Agora and InterChange included in Cpanel is good; Agora for the simple needs of ecommerce capabilites and InteChange for the more complex and cross-functional/upselling needs.
I believe the inclusion in Cpanel gives clients great possibilites without the extra expense
Note: I have had to restart the InterChange server/service several times but lately it has been available to play around with and learn.
All the best this Holiday Season...
