Essentially they are admitting tanning salons cause skin cancer!

SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- A state famous for tanned bodies and year-round sunshine would be the nation's first to ban teenagers from artificial tanning booths if a bill passed by the state Assembly becomes law.

Lawmakers, citing a rise in skin cancer cases in California and across the nation, voted 42-26 to add artificial tanning to teenage no no's that already include smoking, drinking and buying lottery tickets.

Teens often visit tanning salons before proms, vacations and weddings, say owners of an industry that claims 160,000 employees nationally and $5 billion in annual revenue. California is estimated to have 1,500 tanning salons.

Backers of the bill, including the California Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, blame tanning salons for part of 1 million new cases of skin cancer diagnosed every year in the United States. The group cited 7,400 deaths annually from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

"There is a big difference between going to the beach and a tanning salon," said the bill's author, Assemblyman Joe Nation, a Democrat. "When kids go to the beach they put on sun screen."

The bill passed Thursday despite opposition from tanning salons and Republican lawmakers opposed to "meddling" in personal choices.

"If this bill passes it proves there's no part of somebody's life this Legislature won't stick its nose into," said GOP Assemblyman Ray Haynes.

Heidi Blank, manager of San Diego's Hollywood Tans, said she thought the bill could "hurt my business somewhat. But what are you going to do? There's people bigger than me making those decisions."

She said teenagers account for about 5 percent of her store's clients.

The bill, which now goes to the Senate for consideration, requires teenagers to have a doctor or surgeon's prescription before being allowed to tan indoors.

Along with 26 other states, California already requires permission from parents or a legal guardian for teens 15-18 to use artificial tanning salons. Children 14 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Though it can cause skin cancer, but they shouldn't ban it. That is saying "Banning people to go out side". I know one girl (I know she is going to get skin cancer) she goes to the tanning area all the time.... sad.

Yeah. Banning, no.

Although I do agree with the current law, that under 18 must have parent permission.

please, stop interfering with people's godgiven right to darwin themselves out. this is called natural selection. i smoke, drink socially (and frequently =), eat a lot of beef and put a lot of sweetener in my coffee. i am a prime candidate for some form of terminal disease. i am thankful that i am free to make the choice to continue enjoying those things at the price of increased risk.

Yip over 16 I think is fine. Weird in UK can get married at 16, fight in the army, can smoke, but cannot get a drink. :-)

Back on topic have to say in Uk at least lots of tanning shops are money laundry fronts. There are like 9 of them on the street near me and only one seems to have any customers :)

They're also thinking about doing this in Texas as well.

Well first off, I didnt even read the post, but If you live in CA, just go out in the sun for an hour and get some tan.

Heh, if you're too lazy to go outside, you must be a geek. *cough* *cough* *cough*

Always appreciated sunny California ;)
Nevertheless, some scientists say that when you need, want, crave etc (like 4 lumps of sugar in your coffee, 2 kg's of beef per day) etc can't really hurt you...
I you want it, you must need it, so ergo it's not destructive for you...
Give the humanity a break :D

Best example of "failure to read post - just picked up some words" post of the week :D

What did you think this was, Nixon, bypassing school's ban filters on the Internet? :)

The thing is up here in Canada, its me (the tax payer) paying for your treatment for terminal skin cancer, lung cancer, and liver disease.

:D :D :D

But yeah, banning tanning for teens is horrible. I would rather see people tan in a controlled tanning booth, than tan for hours under the sun, which would probably increase the chances of getting skin cancer, etc.

Yep. I don't really see how the tanning salons stay in business. It's sunny here almost constantly, there's really no need for a salon.

I guess there are people that want a fast and uniform tan and have no time after work to go to the beach. I've lived in Florida since 1998 and have no tan because I have no time to go to the beach.

I don't have time to go to the beach either (nor is there one closer than 2 hours away) but I still have a tan just from being outside for short periods of time every day of the week, then for maybe an hour or two on weekends from going to the lake or the park, or anything like that.

I guess banning outright is a stupid thing to do. But this is California we're talking about here, not Alaska ... if kids want a tan, why don't they do it the normal way: Go outside in the sunshine! It's the natural normal way to do it, and it's FREE!
I mean for gods sake, I'm under 18 and I live in England, and I STILL manage to get a tan in the summer. And this is ENGLAND!

Just curious, what are the laws on using a tanning salon in teh UK? Not that I plan on going to one .... :D

Depends how deep of a tan you want to get.

For best tan, be active on the beach...e.g. play volleyball, swim, racketball, soccer etc. Watch out for the topless moms also :D
