Hi is there a way to have a wireless internet access for Laptops?
I'm not talking about wireless lan and cellphone connection but a wireless internet thingy. I saw it on palmpilots and I'm wondering if such thing exists.

A PCMCIA GPRS modem may be an option for you. At least one product (from Novatel (http://www.novatelwireless.com/pcproducts/g100.html)) is available now, and more are due to be on the market early next year. GPRS service is kind of expensive right now, but rates should fall as it becomes more competitive.

GPRS is a wireless protocol offered over GSM networks. It would be a wireless provider that you would sign up with...no other "ISPs" involved. One of these providers is VoiceStream, which offers iStream (http://www.voicestream.com/products/services/istream/overview.asp). Rates are about $4-$10 per MB (!)...So like I said, it's kinda expensive right now. :) (In Canada, Fido currently has a special offer for unlimited GPRS data transfer as well as plenty of voice minutes for $100/month -- about $65 US.)

you might want to check out http://www.xircom.com to see if they have wireless modems too. I haven't looked myself but my last laptop used a 56k Global Access modem (I could use in close to 180 countries). In my opinion they're the best laptop modem makers in the business... And that bright red color in your PCMCIA slot does have a 'cool factor' :D That same laptop is still using that same modem over two years later and it's never failed, even though it's spent half it life in two different countries
