Philipf 05-18-2004, 06:28 PM Gonna have to go with streetsmart. Torith 05-18-2004, 06:29 PM I think street smart interactive 05-18-2004, 06:32 PM Street smart, you won't survive on book smarts alone.. Trifolic 05-18-2004, 06:32 PM Street Smart by far.. Hiccups 05-18-2004, 06:34 PM Book smart. Street smart might get you along better on the street, but a good education is going to do you a lot more good everywhere else. MatthewN 05-18-2004, 06:47 PM Street. Book is good but you dont learn till you get your hands dirty. Torith 05-18-2004, 06:50 PM Great point! Originally posted by Stormhosts Street. I mean if you don't know the streets how can you get to college hehe j/k lorandm 05-18-2004, 08:40 PM Agreed, street smart. Book smart would be better if you'd never leave the comfort of your home ;) Sasan 05-18-2004, 10:30 PM Book smarts by far. Reason: Anyone can pick up street smarts, if they are exposed to those elements, so to say. But not everyone can pick up book smarts. Street smarts are just absorbed into one's mindset from their surroundings (be it urban, business, etc) But in order to have book smarts you need to work and study hard (something that a lot of people cannot do) Which is smarter? Book smarts Which is better? A combination of book and street smarts JWise 05-18-2004, 10:38 PM I disagree.. Anyone can not pick up street smarts. For an example. What is Street Smart, is sometimes dumb in what we call Book Smart. If you have street smarts, you know how to get out of sticky situations. You have built up a great level of what is known to be common sense... heh, common sense is the way of life :) Another good example... We have a couple of rappers now who were street smart, and now worth over 300 Million Dollars. Some aren't We also have a couple of 300 Million dollar rich people who were book smart. Then again, we also have people who are book smart, who are in the same boat as the guys who aren't rich in the street smarts category. Overall: Street Smarts is the best. phpcoder 05-18-2004, 10:40 PM Street smarts, you can't learn this and with this you can find other ways to learn! RajanUrs 05-18-2004, 11:10 PM Book Smart -------> J.K Rowling :D Sasan 05-18-2004, 11:12 PM Originally posted by JWise I disagree.. Anyone can not pick up street smarts. For an example. So according to your logic a cocaine dealer would be smarter than a heart surgeon because he has street smarts? TopRate 05-18-2004, 11:28 PM Street Smart! KIA-Joe 05-19-2004, 12:01 AM It depends on the person and thier career path ... JWise 05-19-2004, 12:35 AM Originally posted by IDS So according to your logic a cocaine dealer would be smarter than a heart surgeon because he has street smarts? Oh boy, whats up with people taking my comments today and switching them around to something crazy. Street Smarts is the best to me I said nothing about a cocaine dealer being smarter than a doctor. I think you need street smarts more than book smarts. Anyway, I used rappers in my example.. not drug dealers.. where you get this from???? Seems to me, your saying "If you have street smarts, you have to be doing something illegally" IE. Selling drugs. Which isn't true Some people on this board gets more confusing day by day. Sasan 05-19-2004, 12:40 AM I mentioned it as an example, light-heartedly, sorry if you read it another way ;) I used drug dealers as an example because IMO they have the best 'urban' street smarts, I know you said rappers but I was just taking it up a notch. EDIT: Yes, I understand people can be street smart on many levels (urban and business) as I mentioned on my first post. But as far as professions go, book smarts are the way to go, IMO. 2Grumpy 05-19-2004, 02:54 AM Street Smarts - someone with plenty of street smarts can screw someone with book smarts out of their money every time. But like most things in life, you need a balance, you're not likely to get a really good job with just street smarts, but even with lots of book smarts and a good job, if you have no street smarts you will likely find yourself beset upon by those who do, scams, ripoffs, hell, car salesmen, you gotta know how to recognize the bad stuff and that's street smarts . mantra 05-19-2004, 11:07 AM I voted Street Smart .... umm.. well because I'm not Book Smart... siplnettech 05-19-2004, 12:48 PM I will go with book smart :D though I can not rule out street smart as they learn with life as some of them become book smart without even having there food 2 times a day. I hats off to those street smart :) THW-Dave 05-19-2004, 01:28 PM Street smart doesnt mean they learned it outside, infront of their homes, on the street. Its more or less means they learned it on their own. Anyone can feed you homework to MAKE you work out of a book, but that wont nearly sink in as much as your self motivated lessons. Some of the smartest people are people that come from the streets and nobody knows about it. *** It is usually the really quite ones or really loud ones that are smart *** It is never the person you think will grow up to be a Dr. that will actually end up a Dr. it is always the one who got terrible grades in the first year of high school or so just because he/she didn't do any work and got bad grades so everyone thinks that they are stupid... Then 20 years later your sitting on you couch 225 pounds with a nasty beard and a beer in one hand and a bag of lays in the other watching T.V. looking at that person you once thought was stupid on T.V. talking about how they revolutionized modern technology. Yes, I know this may be hard to believe but it is for the most part true. sasha 05-19-2004, 03:23 PM "Street smart" is comfort fraze for the uneducated. All human knowledge is in the books, including so called "street smart". Being book smart simply covers it all. Torith 05-19-2004, 05:58 PM I only went to high school not in College (just like my whole family), and I can say we do better off then alot of people who went to college. Lets start off My mother - Owns her own cleaning business My father - Owners his own sign business My brother - is DM of an insurance company in MT My brother - is head chef of a restaurant in Org. My sister - is VP of a Hospital in California So you saying that they didnt want to go to college that they are uneducated and that they will never be as good as someone as college? I can say this that non of them went to college, and doing very well compared to many people I know that have gone to college. Speaking of books (ok I can't resist) The dictionary can't seem to find this word fraze, I assume you mean "phrase"? Stones and glass houses :D Gen-T 05-19-2004, 06:11 PM Originally posted by Dixiesys But like most things in life, you need a balance... Exactly. The person who has a balance of both is better off. Also, I'm not sure if people are equating "street smarts" to "common sense", but I have come to realize over the years that (unlike book smarts), common sense is something that many people have trouble with, regardless of education level, life experience, age, background, etc. 2Grumpy 05-19-2004, 06:20 PM Originally posted by Gen-T Exactly. It's just something you either learn or you don't as life progresses. And no amount of college education will learn you common sense, I don't care what PhD you possess, it doesn't mean you have any common sense, actually some of the most naive, life-stupid people I've ever met were some of the smartest yet they barely had walking around sense when it came to something outside of their realm of expertise, start talking about ANSI standards for <engineering gobbledy gook I don't even begin to understand> and they'll whip your butt like a 12 year old on a playstation, but start talking about things like heck, changing the oil in their car, or how to do laundry properly, or fixing a leaky drain and they get this glazed look in their eyes... JWise 05-19-2004, 11:39 PM If you don't have common sense, usually you don't make sense. :) |
