Ok can someone give me a good reason to use my credit card or debit card online?.

Since i have never used it online yet i have been ripped of online twice by people using my debit cards. I do not give out my details of my cards to anyone yet somehow i have been ripped off twice.

I only know about the second time because of a friend. he needed a bank account for his new job so i went along with him to my bank to back his application for an account. To my horror they said this person is not a good reference. I asked why they said your over drawn ( i dont have an over draft i dont want debt ). I said how can that be i've only made one transaction in the last month and that was a cheque to tera-byte online services.

Someone had managed to order goods this sunday for an amount of £46.80 from http://www.uk2.net. Thankfully the woman who dealt with my case was understanding and stopped the money being withdrawn from my account.

(Don't delete this as uk2.net is a domain regisration and webhosting site).

So can anyone reassure me into wanting to use my debit or credit cards online?.

Well, it is about as secure as using it anywhere in real life for one. The people who think using it on the internet is dangerous also give their credit cards to anyone and everything (restaurants, gas stations, etc.). You could use your debit card to add funds to another web based account and then only give that account out.

If you think about it, it's probably a whole lot safer to use your card on the Net than to hand it to a sixteen-year-old waitperson in a restaurant who then goes in the back room and orders three ski-mobiles and a pet monkey.

In point, your card number was not actually stolen on the Net -- just used there. The card number itself was apparently obtained elsewhere.

I dislike giving out my CC numder online to. If someone gets your number and buys things and you dont fnd out untill you get your CC bill who has to pay for it? will the back fix it.

Alot of things i sign up for also want you SSN for tax reasions and its kept online is there something else you can use besides that? like a bussines ID someone can steal you identy and do all kinds of things with your SSN :(

You gnerally aren't charged for fraudulent transactions (although there is a $50 limit, most cards take care of that).

Debit cards are a bad thing altogether. My bank has been trying very hard to give me a debit card instead of a standard ATM, but I refuse to take it. With a debit card, you have absolutely no protection if someone steals the card; they could even whip out your checking account. At least with a credit card, you have charge-back protection if anything goes wrong.

I have used my credit card online hundreds of times and never had any problems.

Best regards,
Frank Rietta

I think it depends on your bank ..I have a Debit Card "Master Money Card" and I get the same protection as if it were a Master Card if someone uses it with out my permission I get the $$ back.

I havnt had a problem *Yet* *Crosses Fingers*

You know, just by sheer numbers -- so many millions of transactions going by so quickly -- you're probably safer using credit cards on the 'Net than you are in, say, the local department store... where anyone standing in line can look over your shoulder and get your card number and (at stores that ask for it) a look at your driver's license to snag things like your name, address, etc.

Either way, when it's you that gets ripped, apparently no amount of security has been adequate.

Just on this topic, I found this rather relevant article in my local newspaper :

http://www.theage.com.au/news/20001026/A7603-2000Oct25.html

It's an Australian article, but the ramifications can probably be extrapolated to the rest of the Net.

Actually, depending on your bank, you may have certain protections in place if you use a debit card. True, and also depending on where you live. In the US, some states now mandate that debit cards have the same protections as given credit cards.
