http://www.freevsd.org is a good place to know more about virtual server.
However I wonder if what tera-byte offers is the same (atleast conceptually.).
Given below is what the freevsd guys have to say about their software (this is taken from their site)

It allows multiple Virtual Servers to be created on a single hosting server, each with a truly separate and secure web-hosting environment. This reduces an ISP's hardware outlay and also lowers the cost of support due to delegated administration.

If you truly have your own apace, proftpd, sendmail etc.. running then you have a virtual server else it's just another virtual hosting account.

Have a great day :)

Hmm... rather than posting this question and waiting a day for answers before signing up for "instant activation," couldn't you have just signed up anywhere right away, and be activated just as quickly? ;)

I just signed up Sunday night with venturesonline.com and they were up within about 15 minutes. Of course the domain registration took a little longer to propogate through but probably less than a day on that in my case.

Hey Bob (Amar), I know you are trying to set the new record at WHT for most post for a newbie, but at least post facts. :D

It allows multiple Virtual Servers to be created on a single hosting server, each with a truly separate and secure web-hosting environment. This reduces an ISP's hardware outlay and also lowers the cost of support due to delegated administration.

It increases it. VDSs are more resourse intensive then standard shared. Also, it is debateable about reduced support. We have found support increases because we introduce features that people normally wouldn't mess with and screw up. Like full root access - "What is this for? I guess I'll delete it."

However I wonder if what tera-byte offers is the same (atleast conceptually.).

They use Ensim. Not freeVSD

I shouldn't recommned this host, http://www.addr.com . But they did have an instant activation feature (Still you have to wait for the domain to point though).

Search this forum with keyword, Addr.com . You will get some bad results...

I don't know any good hosts that do this anymore. Too often hosts with Instant activation were abused. For example, someone would signup, distribute porn, MP3's, etc, and consume massive bandwidth before a human reviewed the account, found out the Credit Card was a fraud and turned it off.

It is worth the wait to get an account with a decent host, I assure you. What is a few minutes or hours anyways?

Take care,

Brian
