View Full Version : New servers - opinion?

In a couple of weeks, I will be expanding to add a couple of colo'd Dell Poweredge Dual PIII 933 Mhz, 2 GBRAM, 36 GB SCSI HDD servers to the NAC datacenter.

My question: My initial plans were to offer up standard shared hosting and reseller accounts w/Plesk to coincide with my current plans.

However, I am considering using one (or both) of the servers for Virtual Server accounts (FreeVSD) or even leasing the entire server as a dedicated server.

I am testing out FreeVSD now and I wanted some opinions about the market for virtual server accounts.

Also, opinions about my server config/datacenter selection would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

FreeVSD or FreeBSD?

I think there is a tremendous market for freevsd. For those that cant afford a full fledged colo that want "root" access.

We are testing it too, Going to try it with Plesk and a few other CPs as well to see how they all get along.

I think he meant FreeVSD ... he is talking about virtual server accounts, although you can also do this with FreeBSD using jail ...

Anyway, I am not sure how profitable is a virtual server accounts compared to normal virtual accounts ... How many virtual server accounts are you going to put on these server? How many normal virtual accounts can you put on this server? Do the math, and then you can know for sure which one is more profitable ...

cheers,

Dektong,
I agree..as for profit, it would be better to fill the server with shared hosting accounts...but then there is the support load associated with 200-300 separate accounts vs. say 20-30 virtual server accounts.

I also think the customer base attracted by the virtual hosting option would:
1 - require less support regarding simpler issues.
2 - would have a greater retention rate since they are likely to be reselling the space to their own customers.

Thanks for the replies so far!
