Where do you host your secondary dns? Do you have two different servers pointing to each other?

DavidU 11-26-2001, 10:05 PM We just coded in support for everydns.net so that people could get free secondary (or be secondaries to us) for their domains. you can also use secondaries.net (I think) or you can just make one nameserver a slave of another. -davidu bitserve 11-27-2001, 12:33 AM As long as you maintain the DNS records for a zone, you might as well set your primary and secondary DNserver up the exact same way. Make your secondary name server think that it's just as good as a primary. IMHO. The only time I set up a master/slave for a zone is if some other organization wants to maintain their own DNS records. Then we'll be the slave, and give them control. Even if they're just the secondary DNserver, we can make them master, so that they can "maintain their own DNS table". We unfortunately set up both of our name servers at the same ISP. Now it's too hard to move the second name server to another ISP because we can't move/change the IP address too easily. So we're just going to be setting up a third nameserver at the second ISP. That's something that everyone should consider when they set up. I wish we would have used ns1 and ns3 when we originally started with the first ISP. Then we could have used ns2 at the second ISP. If I haven't lost ya'. jks 11-27-2001, 05:57 PM Originally posted by bitserve We unfortunately set up both of our name servers at the same ISP. Setup a nameserver with another ISP and copy over all the zone information (remembering to change the ip of the ns2 on these zonefiles to the new IP). Then use your registrars tools to change the gluerecords on the root servers to your new nameserver IP. netsolutions 11-27-2001, 07:37 PM If you setup a second NS with another ISP and keep your current one active you can then just change the IP with NetSol (or whoever) of the name server and when it takes effect it will just switch over. Ales 11-28-2001, 02:18 PM This is something I was wondering about too... Let's say you have ns1 and ns2 in one NOC, than you change to another, thus changing the IPs. You have xxx customers, who all use present ns1 and ns2 to point their domains at your servers. Now, the ns1 and ns2 names will remain the same, but the IPs have changed. Will the domains still work? Must all the customers be contacted to change their DNS settings? With Stargateinc.com, you do have to provide both the name and IP of the nameserver for the domain. I don't know about others...
