View Full Version : HostOnce.com problems - join the fight!

know I'm not alone on this! I have a HostOnce.com unix account
(Donhost resellers). It was fine until it was deleted wrongly. They
then reactivated it a week later and I uploaded the site. Problem is
nobody can access it! It's been like this for about 2 or 3 weeks. Now,
digging around with various tools it seems that the fault is with
their name servers, namely that my entry is missing some vital bits. I
keep telling them this and they seem a bit stupid, fobbing me off with
some bull**** about the new .biz domains delaying propagation (even
though it's nothing to do with propagation!). Anyone else having
similar problems? If so we can join and give them a good kick up the
backside!

For your information, the domain is reride.net and the nameservers are
ns1.hostonce.org (195.10.228.161) and ns2.hostonce.org
(139.130.95.73). If anyone with the knowledge could advise on this I
would be greatful.

Additionally, I would like to hear from peope experiencing similar problems so we can band together and get this mess sorted out. You may want to join the Yahoo! Group, HostOnce, never again! The URL is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hostonce/

Thanks

Well ns1.hostonce.org is answering for your domain, it is giving the IP of 193.130.95.72.

NS2 is not even answering, period for your domain or anything. It seems down but it is givin a different address than what you gave.

There are no probagation delays going on, jeesh. Gotta love that one.

Thanks for taking a look for me! I've found that ns1.hostonce.org doesn't give me the correct IP, I get

<nslookup:reride.net/*/195.10.228.161>

Non-authoritative answer:

Authority:
net NS 74395 A.GTLD-SERVERS.net 192.5.6.30
net NS 74395 G.GTLD-SERVERS.net 192.42.93.30
net NS 74395 H.GTLD-SERVERS.net 192.54.112.30
net NS 74395 C.GTLD-SERVERS.net 192.26.92.30
net NS 74395 I.GTLD-SERVERS.net 192.36.144.133
net NS 74395 B.GTLD-SERVERS.net 192.33.14.30
net NS 74395 D.GTLD-SERVERS.net 192.31.80.30
net NS 74395 L.GTLD-SERVERS.net 192.41.162.30
net NS 74395 F.GTLD-SERVERS.net 192.35.51.30

net NS 74395 K.GTLD-SERVERS.net 213.177.194.5
net NS 74395 E.GTLD-SERVERS.net 192.12.94.30
net NS 74395 M.GTLD-SERVERS.net 202.153.114.101
NSLookup normal completion.

There seems to be some confusion where ns1.hostonce.org has the IP 195.10.228.161, but a reverse lookup gives no details. However, looking up 193.130.95.72 I get ns1.hostonce.org. Looking up my domain on that IP I get the expected details. Something is very messed up somewhere!!

Tell them to buy O'reilly's book on BIND.

The problem is that the version of BIND they're using requires that the IP address of the nameserver to reverse resolve, but they can't resolve because they're not allowing recursion.

The problem with the weird results could be solved by allowing recursion, or hosting their own reverse DNS on the same DNS servers.

But the real problem is that they don't have DNS entries (aren't providing DNS) for reride.net, even though they're authoritative. No results are being returned. And whenever you query a domain name that isn't resolved locally by those servers, you're going to get those weird results.

That would depend on what sort of specs you require for the account. There are some very good hosts that have plans for under $10 a month (you might want to check out the webhosting offers forum), but if you need a lot of space you're going to find it hard to get a quality host for that range (my 2 cents)
