Thats descrimination. Laws prevent asking, or hiring based on age. But maybe things are different in teh UK

One might also speculate that since a minor can not legally enter into a contract, what security do they have? Do you pay a deposit upfront?

That is true and of concern, but 18 year olds should be fine.

That might depend on the laws in the UK. At any rate, I don't want to be seen as trashing the thread, so I will stop now ;)

I'm from the UK and hope that no skilled web designer does this. Also, under 19? Why because you guys are under 19? I'm 23 and don't see what difference it makes.

Is this a joke?

Let's let the kids play in their own grounds. :D Now seriously, it's their choice, but nevertheless it's a bit out of line. You should consider some real pro's if you want to do some nice business, and stop discriminating, it's really harmfull for business. Just an advice...

It's not discrimination, it's their specifications. If they want to hire under 19 year olds, who's to tell them they can't? Seriously now, this is stupid, 20% is double what you should get for giving the developer the project. And under 19, is a bit odd, but this cannot be classed as discrimination.

By saying that you should consider real pro's, is discrimating against minors. I wouldn't be suprised if there are minors out there that are at the same level as the people you call "pro's". A lot of minors grow up around computers and gain the knowledge and experience needed to design a website.

As yet, age discrimination is not prohibited under English law. However, a government code of practice encourages employers to avoid using age limits or ranges, and phrases that imply age restrictions in job adverts. As a result of a European initiative, the UK will bring in age discrimination law by 2006.

They simply want students to help in their project, no need to get all technical on them!

For instance, the job may require young people for some specific reason.

Basically there is no need to make remarks re discrimination unless you intend going over to London, hiring a layer, and taking them to court for not giving you a job that pays 20% of the normal rate. Why bother!

And even as stated above the discrim laws arent applied in the UK yet

I agree completely. I think any advertisement should simply read "Looking for the best person for the job"

ow well
think, us "minors" do alot of work for free so we can practise our work, and how to make better websites etc, for free, so if some ones offering us 20% for a site we made, atleast its better than nothing ;)

sounds soley to me like they want cheap labour, young enough to be inexperianced about their rights therefore won't argue. At the end of the day, that might not be the case. It APPEARS to be like that from my point of view. These guys should have worded it better. I don't see anyone applying for the job the way it sits now. I'm not moaning about it, I'm just commenting on how it looks. I can't judge, I don't know the real facts.

Really, all they're looking for is cheap labor... If an adult had to do the work, they need to eat, pay their bills (and not be subsidized by their parents, etc...) 20% is a rip-off though, especially when they would know you're making 4 times what they did but in PURE PROFIT.

Should be "best person for the job willing to work for cheap"...

yeah I do agree but at the end of the day, remember, if someone is stupid enough to take the work... then they know full well what they deal is.

Who said minors are unprofessional!?
I'm coming up to 16 and if I were 'unprofessional' would I have designed for worldwide companies such as Masterfoods (Mars, Uncle Bens, Snickers) and would I have been told that I am a very good designer by many people? Oh and would I also own and run www.x2digital.net?

Not all 'minors' hang around on street corners getting drunk so please, don't hypocritise us minors.

Thank you
