Koopa 11-25-2001, 06:31 PM I'm looking for a site that will host and install bulletin boards for free, i know these sites exist but i can't seem to find many, can someone suggest a good one? Thanks :) pgrote 11-25-2001, 07:13 PM Bulletin board install is pretty easy and most of the good hosts will help you install it if you ask. A few of them come with there own install scripts that do most of the work for you. A couple of things to ask when you are checking on hosts ... do they offer CGI-BIN and PHP. Good luck! NORRITT 11-26-2001, 01:45 PM do you really have problems installing a bulletin board? have you even tried it? that is that easy ... really easy! Please understand me right, that is soooo easy you can not do anything wrong, really! lets take a vB2 for example. most of them are using similar installer: you just upload all the files, than you go to your browser (that is the stuff you are surfing with .. I mean in the internet) and than you just type in yourdomain.com/forum/admin/install.php (might also be without /admin/ ... thats long ago I installed it myself ;)) Than you see the installer. Now it is easy. You choose the database you want to use. Filling in the password, database and user. Now all the other stuff like creating the tables etc. is doing the installer on its own. You just have to fill in your User Name you want to use in your board in the final step. thats all. your board is running and ready to be used. really thats even much easier than installing windows! bobcares 11-26-2001, 02:10 PM Hi! All you have to do is look for hosts with cgi-bin oor php support. Most of the common bulletin boards require a database (mostly mysql). So any host with mysql support and cgi-bin or php are fine. You can either ask them to do it or do the install yourself. Some good boards are vBulletin x-forum (highly recommended) Phorum phpBB All these are very popular and feature rich. Have a great day :) Regards amar Pilgrim 11-26-2001, 02:53 PM I don't think that is what he is looking for. Try these: http://www.ezboard.com/ http://www.boardhost.com/ http://www.fboards.com/ Or take a look at http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Remotely_Hosted/Bulletin_Board_Message_Systems/ for about 50 more free boards. Koopa 11-26-2001, 03:22 PM What i meant was i was looking for a free host which installs bulletin boards for free But not like Xsorbit etc. :) bobcares 11-26-2001, 03:27 PM Wow, that may be too much to ask. Why do you want it free. .... Anyway why not take an account with everyone.net. They have forums too, besides other stuff to start your own portal... You can use the forums only . Those are real good. Have a great day :) Regards Amar Lain 11-26-2001, 03:27 PM Originally posted by X_Treme What i meant was i was looking for a free host which installs bulletin boards for free But not like Xsorbit etc. :) I think you're on your own :) I know Hostrocket has an option in the cp to install openBB, but only on the newer servers. Installing a bb is really easy, if you know the basics such as chmoding or setting up a database. HR Justin 12-03-2001, 11:26 PM Actually, your both right. :-D Originally posted by Jedito I think that you mean XMB That is a new Option in all Cpanel host. StarGate 12-04-2001, 08:21 AM ... with a FreeHost but every host that runs CPanel 4 can be of use to you. Cpanel 4 lets you automatically create a bulletin board (which is legal therfore too cause it has a license). I t is not so great then vBulletin but it is better then most alternatives. Try it. I did (for fun) and it is great. You don't even have to mess with MySQL although it runs on MySQL=fast ;) |
