View Full Version : cogent, who uses them
cbaker17 11-24-2001, 08:30 PM Im doing some test on cogent too see how netrails coming along. Who all uses cogent do you know, and whay citys are they in.
I know
<edit>
uses them in atlanta, but they appear to be a Reseller for some 5starcommunications, which i think is cari.net but im not sure.... They seem quite SLOW on various tests.
So i would like to test other providers using cogent as well, so i can see how cogents various network segments perform.
So anyways if you know any anyone thats not a reseller and directly has a cogent circuit live, please post url/IP and location.
Thank You....
<<MOD NOTE:>>
Charles, if you want non-resellers then I see no point in your listing someone you know if a reseller other than to flame them. Please step into the shoes of others before you post.
<</MOD NOTE>>
tranxactglobal.com = Division of DV2
FiveStar Communications = Merging with (or maybe already merged with) DV2
None of the companies have an association with Cari.net, which is based on the west coast.
cbaker17 11-24-2001, 10:05 PM Thanks jeff i wasnt sure, by the way have you seen a increase in speed with the acquisition of netrail...

coloman 11-24-2001, 10:38 PM Tranxact wins 5 out of 6 including the most important ones - uunet, above net, Internap and exodus - others included sprint and qwest
a subisidiary of dtwebworks - affordablecolo - has their page hosted in the same place and claims 15-60 ms times - of which I do not believe any are listed below.
This is a lesson not to throw out mud before checking your own house.
Tranxact is on our cogent only network and does not show our fully redundnat network. -Just tracerting to a website of a company does not always tell the full story and a more thorough investigation should be taken - including is the company profitable, etc. etc.
I will stand by our network anytime - especially the Cogent only bandwidth:)

Throughput has never been a problem... I've always had great download/upload speeds. It's been the latency. And latency has improved dramatically since the Netrail acquisition.... and should continue to do so as they fully integrate all of the peering arrangements of Netrail.
On a separate issue: They are totally closing down the Netrail network from what I understand though... which is rather disappointing, since they had Charlotte, NC covered, and I love Charlotte. :)
If you have any further questions, let me know.
cbaker17 11-24-2001, 10:56 PM Boy do you look like an idiot coloman, your tracing to our personal network, our customers are turned up in dallas, on a uunet/level3 network, the network your tracing too is in kansas, what an idiot...
cbaker17 11-24-2001, 11:01 PM Furthermore i wanted to note that our dallasnetwork within the us averages 50-60ms at all times which would mean that it would beat your network in speed 100% of the time

I wouldn't call him an idiot for assuming that affordablecolo.com is located at the actual place you're doing the collocation--how is he supposed to know your site is hosted somewhere else? I think pinging/tracing to a host's website is a commonly used technique to determine your network speed. It might be a smart idea for you (Charles) to move affordablecolo.com to a server at your Dallas facility, so potential customers who don't know the ins-and-outs of your company will be able to get an accurate reading on just how fast your collo service actually is.
UmBillyCord 11-24-2001, 11:08 PM Yeah, thats it. Insult more people Charles.
but they appear to be a Reseller for some 5starcommunications, which i think is cari.net but im not sure.... They seem quite SLOW on various tests.
You look like one too. Simple research would have easily told you this isn't true. Oh, since you don't want 'resellers' who use Cogent to reply, I will save all the information I have gathered from my experience with Cari.net/SD Colo.
It is funny, 4 moths ago, only a few people posted anything about Cogent. Now as this new Buzzword has spread and hundreds of Cogent experts are popping up all over, you now seem to be warming up to it. Also, Cogent isn't the only Gig-e provider out there. But I am sure you know that.

cbaker17 11-24-2001, 11:16 PM Of course he should have asked for an ip from our network or did his work.... if he visits affordablecolo.com he clearly sees all customers go into dallas, and when his tracert goes to kansas... that should send up a flag..
thanks joe...
Furthermore unbillycord, i was in fact one of the first people to ever do research on cogent and one of the first to talk with them about their network and feasibility of using them. THey have been up until now too say the least NOT GOOD, with the aquisition of netrail, they have improved quite a bit, to where they are feaible to use.
Its has nothing to do with jumping on a bandwagon. We have in fact had the ability to use cogent since they began... We have chosen not to offer them, we do many many months of research before we will even consider launching a product. You may see us offering them as a completly seperate low end product in the near future, but as you can see im doing a ton of research hence, me questioning about cogent in different markets. Im gathering as much information on them as i can, so i can properly educate future customers.
Furthermore how the heck would i have any idea who 5starcommunications was, ive heard of them before but have no idea who they are.....
Apparant. all you cogent kids will continue to bash me... thats cool... ill continue my thread back on topic discussing how cogent is with jeff. You guys jump on the cogent bandwagon and bash away. Ill stay here in my warm office, with a company whos 8x older then you and who does their research, to insure happy customers.
If you dont like that too bad.
UmBillyCord 11-24-2001, 11:28 PM Actually Charles, as much as it pains me, I am with you. I know you have been talking Cogent since the beginning. I also know you are not jumping on a bandwagon, I think you are starting to realize that you need to take the chance and offer it to compete. I feel you like to bash things/people first, then ask questions later.
What I like about SD Colo/Cari.net is that I have a choice. I can go tiered with Level3/Genuity or I can go Cogent. It is as simple as pulling a drop and plugging into another. Also, I am not a Cogent kid. 95% of everything we use is Level3/Genuity. Only high traffic sites and deds that want cheap bandwidth are given Cogent. I, like you, don't really know where Cogent will be in a year. But while it is hear, may as well be first to offer it.

I think it might be appropriate to remove all of the garbage posts and bring this thread back on topic. Charles was trying to have a reasonable discussion about the progress of Cogent Communications, not some kind of "My connection is faster than yours" or "My company has been around for longer than yours" thread. Just a thought.

I also though may have slammed cogent over and over and over and over and over and well you get my point
I would like to see them become a major player, and one day drive down the market in price
Lets get this thread back on board

Major player... maybe. Drive down prices... I'm not so sure that will happen. I think that once Cogent gets things up and running with all of their peering arrangements, they'll jack up their prices. They'll have a premium network, possibly even capable of being considered Tier 1 (note: I said possibly, don't jump on me), and I think they'll probably start charging for using it appropriately. I mean, if you had a shoe factory, and at first no one liked them because they weren't comfortable enough... and then one of your designers came out with some new form of padding that made them much more comfortable.... and lots of people started buying them... wouldn't you jack up the price? Probably a bad analogy, but hey... I tried... :)

You are confusing Cogent and other Gig-e's with standard providers. They are two seperate technologies for delivering bandwidth. Sure, maybe their prices will go up, however it will never be anything to the levels of the tier 1's now. Also, as a side note. There are other ones coming to market. Rackshack has hinted too about this. They will go live with a second drop of this kind soon I believe.

Not at all. I completely understand the differences between these two types of providers. The companies who rely on Bell for loops using the standard Tx/DSx products will always be more expensive, because Bell has to put food on their employee's tables as well. When I refer to "Tier 1" I'm speaking about the quality of the network and peering arrangements - NOT how they deliver the products to the customers.
I know for a fact that even the more "conventional" players are starting to offer Ethernet-based products, because it's significantly easier and cheaper to deliver products to customers this way. XO, Level3 and Verio are a few that have offered me products in this manner in their "on-net" buildings.
Regards,
coloman 11-25-2001, 12:24 AM another question we must not forget to ask - after we ask who the backbones are - is: what is the financial stability of your company - are you profitable - at the net level - not ebitda or anything else - and how long will they be around. Also - we all need to consider that when spending money - how much is 15 ms worth on our bottom line - I know that may sound silly - but where does the end user stop and say - hey this site is not performing right - I don't think they wil notice a difference between 50 and 80 ms - but you company will notice a difference in cutting someone a bigger check for your bandwidth expeniture which comes right out of your pocket for nothing more than a perceived performance increase.
But I guess it is America - and we are all free to spen our hard earned nickles on anything we want!!!!
coloman 11-25-2001, 12:27 AM cbaker - what is your tracert from the uunet remote I ran against your kc network - please post it so we can see your network in dallas - I would like to see if you can beat 19ms :)

Regards,
It is nearly impossible to have a reasonable discussion when the 'garbage' begins in the very first thread. The resulting garbage will be left as is. People need to know who not to get a server from around here. If people can't stay on topic, then this thread will be locked.
