View Full Version : The coolest site.. "Internet library"
dgessler 11-24-2001, 04:08 PM Was just surfing along this morning and came across this message board I visit often (www.domainnameforum.co.uk) and someone had posted this site www.archive.org . It's so amazing, it stored all websites since 1996 and you can view them, I have no idea how they did it. Anyways, just wanted to share a url with everyone if you didn't know about it already, I've been using it all morning looking at sites like angelfire, yahoo, lycos, lol in 1996 they had a horrible design compared to now. Also I've noticed those sites only offered searches back then and now they provide all these mail services, news, chat, im, etc. Also it's interested checking out my own site looking at all the designs I had made, it;s pretty nice:D . really amazing how it stores even the very small sites, like my freind's sites. I have no idea how they did that?? heh
method5 11-24-2001, 04:27 PM Wow, that archive site is pretty cool.
Web Hosting Talk, the early days ;)

I do :) It's when he had his hosting resource site.
mdrussell 11-24-2001, 06:35 PM Check yahoo.com, altavista.com, microsoft.com and ibm.com back in 1996... didn't anyone know how to design decent looking sites back then?
mahinder 11-24-2001, 06:55 PM look like microsoft was down in 1997 :D
wow, it also stores images, just wondering what may be there data storage capacities and how much it will be costing them to keep backup of every thing ??

Somebody told me 100 terabytes..although I highly doubt they backup everything
Relyc 11-24-2001, 08:09 PM Well aside from a whois lookup, this is certainly one way to see how long a company has been around.
cd_mate 11-25-2001, 01:40 AM Hi, its run from Alexa.com
There is a toolbar from alexa you can download to find different info about sites and how many hits etc they get!
I run the domain forum and was wondering where the hits came from :)
Im looking to swap links with sites for a new site of mine so if anyones interested let me know!
coolguy23 11-25-2001, 02:42 AM cool!!!
this is really helpful and fun :)

Well aside from a whois lookup, this is certainly one way to see how long a company has been around. Not reliably -- or even as reliably as a whois lookup, which only shows how long a particular domain name has been in use. A company certainly could have been around before using a given domain name; and on the other hand if an owner transfers ownership of a domain to a new company, the "date created" on the whois record will still be the older date. And there'll be no evidence of the change.
This is even less reliable, for one thing because especially for earlier dates and older companies a domain name might have been in use for email and other services for years before a web site was online... and because this particular service isn't comprehensive. For example, the first site I put together went online in 1995, but they don't have it listed before 1999 -- they missed the early years, when it was really tacky (intentionally, in one version, I swear!).

It's microsoft.com....not miRcrosoft.com.
I went back to register.com's site back on Dec 02, 1998 and I found out .tv domain registrations were $1000/ year!!!
archive.org is amazing:)
