Does anyone know of a surge protector for cat 5.
We have a 100 mbt ethernet line into a server. about once a week the system reboots and we have to reconfigure the connection.
We tried OS reinstall twice, 2 completely new (custom built) systems.
Three different power supply's. 2 new UPS. tried a ac inverter on a dc power supply
.. the system still seems to be getting hit from a surge.
The Only thing I can think of now is the ethernet feed.
Any suggestions

Where's this cat5 coming from? I haven't really heard of power surges on a cat5. Even if there was one, I wouldn't think it would reboot the machine...

Check at Staples or Office Depot, I've seen them before.

I have never seen a CAT 5 Ethernet surge protector. You should really take a look at your netword design and see where you could be getting surges (if that's the issue) and fix it.
Let us know if you do find a CAT 5 SP.

Ouch. If you think it is a surge from the Cat 5 network line that is causing your server to reboot, I would be more concerned about how the surge is getting on to the Cat 5 line routinely, than I would be about preventing the surge from reaching the server.
Cat 5 lines should not have surges.

Did you try installing FreeBSD instead of Windows? ;)

Funny you put it that way, The Actuall admin was one of the team that wrote the FTP release for Debian. The system in question is a DSL server, ... I'm assuming it is windows, but I could be mistaken.

Mmmmmm donut...
What were we talking about again? :D
I would check the grounding of the computer, and the switch/hub... If they don't share a common ground, it'll cause the computer to reboot...
