On the face of it, it looks like a great deal. You're talking an average of $185 monthly, including the set up fee, (or $166.67 without it), for a substantial server and a generous amount of bandwidth.

That's the problem. It looks like too good of a deal. The clincher is the prepayment for a full year. That's a common trait among some of the worst companies in the business. There's a substantial difference between a year long contract, where you pay monthly, and one like this where you pay for the whole year up front.

Frankly, it sets off my BS detector (Bogus Sale) big time. It's a three alarm story. If big companies like Dell Hosting, who have some amazing prices, or Dialtone and catalog, which have some of the lowest, are substantially higher, then that should suggest something.

Besides, you;re only talking hardware and connectivity, Without the right company, they mean nothing. The way con men work is to gain your confidence (hence the term). One way is to offer a deal that sounds too good to be true. It probably is.

I think a reputable company would just hold you to a 12 month contract. One that isn't will just hold your money.

the RAM is 512 , HD 45 GB, 507 IP address, 200 GB transfer
for less than $200?????

like Duster says, i think it is a con deal ... the company got to be losing $$$. Just think if you use 200GB a month, would the company lose $$$$

I am a bit curious as to what company is offering this unbelievable deal (in the literal sense). Perhaps you could post its URL.

Tommie
10-24-2000, 11:02 AM
But the thing is that this is not their regular price this is a promotional offer valid only till 6th November

Duster
10-24-2000, 11:47 AM
The limited time special can be a hook to get you to part with your money immediately. If it was ongoing, you might take your time.

There are legitimate companies that do have specials, so that alone doesn't signify anything. The year paid up front still remains a warning sign, along with the too good to be true (even as a special) deal.

I'd still like to see the URL for the company.

Da lowest rate I seen for bandwidth is $2/gig per month.

So, 200gig x $2 x 12months = $4800

Sumtin wrong?

My post was a bit short. It *is* a good deal, but only if it with a reputable company, etc. Without knowing this, then it might be one of the best bad deals I've seen. Know whuddameanjellybean?

Another Thing I was wrong they dont provide 200 GB bandwidth with the server Bandwidth is seperate @ $1 per 3GB

Hi Guys,
I think I know the provider Tommie is talking about infact I had been their subscriber since the last 4 months only cancled it a week ago. The URL is http://server-source.net without www in the begining. I think they are the best provider they have a classy service. I have a list of their Good Sides & Bad Sides.
Good Sides :-
1. Excelent Service
2. Excelent Customer Support
3. Really Fast Connection
4. If you want to unscribe in the between of your contract they refund your money. Like I had used the Linux Server Reseller for 4 months they returned me the 8 Months fees @ $150 per month. I got back $1200.
5. The Cheapest Bandwidth Rate i.e. $1 per 3GB of band width

Bad Sides :-
1. They Dont Provide their Telephone Numbers
2. They Require a minimum 1 or 2 year contract pre paid.

I would say that If I would not have gone through a loss I would have continued with them & If I was to rate them out of 10 I would rate them 9.75 or even 10 .

Can somebody please explain why you can't do a whois search on them??? No records found. Domain available for registration. Definitely something wrong!!!

Why is it that dedicated companies are struggling for business? You must see the under cover offers I have received from NetInfra, also pre-payed for a year.

Hello,

Here is the Whois for this company. It seems, at least from the Whois record, that the domain was created on 10/24/00, yesterday. In that case, this thread seems to be just an attempt to gain cheap advertisement.

If it was for real, I'd probably buy the thing and just sell the bandwidth... lol. Economically, that pricing makes no sense -- which kind of makes me wonder if they'd still be there after the check cleared. But apparently somebody (above) likes 'em, so maybe I'll have a look-see.

:)
someone created a sub domain of microsoft... so you could do that:

microsoft.com.can-host.com

that wouldnt mean that microsoft.com is hosted by us, but that we created a dns record pointing to there :P

Of course, internic shouldnt be showing that stuff :) I wonder what the hell is going on ovr there

Seems a good price. I am always leary of prepaid long contracts. What if the service is not what you expected Can you get out?
Personally i like the month to month deals It keeps the hosting company honest. We buy our bandwidth like that so the provider HAS to maintain the service standard or run the real risk of losing a large customer.

etLux
10-26-2000, 10:15 AM
I agree with excalibur on the matter of long-term contracts. Early in the game, I got burned on a couple of these. The 'Net's a volatile economic environment. Both your needs and what a provider has to do to remain profitable can change rapidly, so getting "locked in" often isn't a great idea on either side of the wire.

Jeez, what a long topic. Too bad I'm getting in on it too late. :)

I think that Microsoft change had to do with the attack recently. Microsoft said that their source code was downloaded for Windows platforms, and possibly modified. Just think ... if crackers have the source code to Win2K now and find one small error in it, everyone using it could be doomed. Furthermore, they could have altered the source code to add a small unnoticable change which would let them take control in future releases.

That's why I use Linux. ;)

If you read through the thread you'll realise why - it just seems too good to be true. And on the Net, if it's too good to be true, it is.

I suggest you look at http://www.webexpose.net or http://www.catalog.com for your needs.
