Tommie 10-24-2000, 09:34 AM I just wanted to know that the server with the below mentioned specification worth $2223 per year ?
The Specifiocations are as follows :-
Dual Intel Pentium III 550 MHz
Unix / Apache OS **
256 KB cache
512 MB RAM
Three 15 GB ATA/66
Dual 100 MBps Bay Networks Ethernet Cards
32-Bit PCI Graphics Adapater w/ 2 MB RAM
507 IP Addresses
200 GB Transfer Per Month
PLESK Server Administrator
Pre-Installed Software
Requires 1 Year Pre Pay Contract
$2000 Per Year + $223 Setup Fees
Chicken 10-24-2000, 09:54 AM Yep. :)
Duster 10-24-2000, 10:00 AM On the face of it, it looks like a great deal. You're talking an average of $185 monthly, including the set up fee, (or $166.67 without it), for a substantial server and a generous amount of bandwidth.
That's the problem. It looks like too good of a deal. The clincher is the prepayment for a full year. That's a common trait among some of the worst companies in the business. There's a substantial difference between a year long contract, where you pay monthly, and one like this where you pay for the whole year up front.
Frankly, it sets off my BS detector (Bogus Sale) big time. It's a three alarm story. If big companies like Dell Hosting, who have some amazing prices, or Dialtone and catalog, which have some of the lowest, are substantially higher, then that should suggest something.
Besides, you;re only talking hardware and connectivity, Without the right company, they mean nothing. The way con men work is to gain your confidence (hence the term). One way is to offer a deal that sounds too good to be true. It probably is.
I think a reputable company would just hold you to a 12 month contract. One that isn't will just hold your money.

the RAM is 512 , HD 45 GB, 507 IP address, 200 GB transfer
for less than $200?????
like Duster says, i think it is a con deal ... the company got to be losing $$$. Just think if you use 200GB a month, would the company lose $$$$

Duster 10-24-2000, 10:55 AM I am a bit curious as to what company is offering this unbelievable deal (in the literal sense). Perhaps you could post its URL.
Tommie 10-24-2000, 11:02 AM But the thing is that this is not their regular price this is a promotional offer valid only till 6th November
Duster 10-24-2000, 11:47 AM The limited time special can be a hook to get you to part with your money immediately. If it was ongoing, you might take your time.
There are legitimate companies that do have specials, so that alone doesn't signify anything. The year paid up front still remains a warning sign, along with the too good to be true (even as a special) deal.
I'd still like to see the URL for the company.
Bogus 10-24-2000, 03:48 PM Ye man, ye! Give us the url and then we can help ya out.
Bogus 10-24-2000, 03:51 PM Da lowest rate I seen for bandwidth is $2/gig per month.
So, 200gig x $2 x 12months = $4800
Sumtin wrong?
partition 10-24-2000, 04:29 PM Let us know the URL !!
Chicken 10-24-2000, 06:03 PM My post was a bit short. It *is* a good deal, but only if it with a reputable company, etc. Without knowing this, then it might be one of the best bad deals I've seen. Know whuddameanjellybean?
Tommie 10-25-2000, 02:00 AM Looks like that they have extended the offer till 30th of Nomember .
Another Thing I was wrong they dont provide 200 GB bandwidth with the server Bandwidth is seperate @ $1 per 3GB
fallus 10-25-2000, 02:56 AM give us the url... or are you just mean? :p
kunal 10-25-2000, 05:34 AM Give us the URL or you get the CDS.. hehe.. naa.. common dude.. lets share here... email us if you wont. :)
webfors 10-25-2000, 10:33 AM Ok Tommie,
ahhh, URL PLEASE!!! :D
PaulJ 10-25-2000, 12:53 PM Hi Guys,
I think I know the provider Tommie is talking about infact I had been their subscriber since the last 4 months only cancled it a week ago. The URL is http://server-source.net without www in the begining. I think they are the best provider they have a classy service. I have a list of their Good Sides & Bad Sides.
Good Sides :-
1. Excelent Service
2. Excelent Customer Support
3. Really Fast Connection
4. If you want to unscribe in the between of your contract they refund your money. Like I had used the Linux Server Reseller for 4 months they returned me the 8 Months fees @ $150 per month. I got back $1200.
5. The Cheapest Bandwidth Rate i.e. $1 per 3GB of band width
Bad Sides :-
1. They Dont Provide their Telephone Numbers
2. They Require a minimum 1 or 2 year contract pre paid.
I would say that If I would not have gone through a loss I would have continued with them & If I was to rate them out of 10 I would rate them 9.75 or even 10 .
Bogus 10-25-2000, 01:51 PM Can somebody please explain why you can't do a whois search on them??? No records found. Domain available for registration. Definitely something wrong!!!
Why is it that dedicated companies are struggling for business? You must see the under cover offers I have received from NetInfra, also pre-payed for a year.
Chunno 10-25-2000, 06:21 PM Hello,
Here is the Whois for this company. It seems, at least from the Whois record, that the domain was created on 10/24/00, yesterday. In that case, this thread seems to be just an attempt to gain cheap advertisement.

etLux 10-25-2000, 06:38 PM If it was for real, I'd probably buy the thing and just sell the bandwidth... lol. Economically, that pricing makes no sense -- which kind of makes me wonder if they'd still be there after the check cleared. But apparently somebody (above) likes 'em, so maybe I'll have a look-see.

kunal 10-25-2000, 06:54 PM It seems like they are hosted with Alabanza? Is it just me? or what?
etLux 10-25-2000, 07:01 PM EVERYONE is hosted with Alabanza. They've secretly taken over the entire Internet.
kunal 10-25-2000, 07:03 PM Lol.. yea.. and your brain has been doing to much of coding lately ;)
etLux 10-25-2000, 07:05 PM Geez, I thought you were kidding... lol.

Where are you getting that from etLux? Anyone with some knowledge of IPs would know that 300 on the end is a huge discrepancy...
Funnily enough however, my traceroutes are timing out bad, even though I can get through to their site..
Bwahahahhahhahah It looks like we're spectators in the middle of a hijacking attack!
kunal 10-25-2000, 07:29 PM The whois was done using Sam Spade version 1.14
etLux 10-25-2000, 07:31 PM It's for real... lol...

[Edited by etLux on 10-25-2000 at 07:34 PM]
kunal 10-25-2000, 07:36 PM What is happening??
I have a suspicion someone's using the 'forged e-mail' trick to hijack Microsoft's domains :D
Serves them right too for not switching authentication methods.
Bogus 10-25-2000, 07:38 PM Well, this "tommie" person and "source..." are both using the "@sub-mail.com" domain, the only thing that is different is the part before the "@"
Go to the sub-mail com website. They provide anonymous email. heeheeha, I'm laughing so much I need to see a doctor.
Where is tommie anyways???
etLux 10-25-2000, 07:39 PM But... but... but... this is... INTERNIC!
Everyone knows they're so secure that not even God could break in.
This must be the truth, because it says so, right here on INTERNIC, right?
http://www.internic.net/cgi-bin/whois?whois_nic=microsoft.com
Maybe Bill is finally just coming clean.
Bogus 10-25-2000, 07:46 PM This is getting "Bonkers!"
Can't see anything wrong with microsofts pages yet.
Fιlix C.Courtemanche 10-25-2000, 07:49 PM some basic notions of DNS...
:)
someone created a sub domain of microsoft... so you could do that:
microsoft.com.can-host.com
that wouldnt mean that microsoft.com is hosted by us, but that we created a dns record pointing to there :P
Of course, internic shouldnt be showing that stuff :) I wonder what the hell is going on ovr there
That's quite true, Felix, and that was what I originally thought. However, the 'contact' names now give it away and the false IP address posted by etLux rounds things off.
etLux 10-25-2000, 07:53 PM I wonder if this is why I one of my sites keeps getting routed to RussianDancingGirls.ru ...
Chicken 10-25-2000, 07:53 PM If you were to search for "eebu" you'll see two entries much like what you see for microsoft.com (it just means there are are more than 1 record matching that description. Why you can't single out microsoft.com is beyond me, but I don't think you are witnessing an attack.
kunal 10-25-2000, 07:54 PM Its all an Illusion! :)
Hmmmm...... *mind gets murkier*
Ok, time out for me :D Anyone want some coffee? ;)
kunal 10-25-2000, 08:02 PM Meeeee.. its 5:32am here.. man.. i need some sleep! ;)
Actually, coffee doesn't suit me at this time. What about  ?
Dylan 10-25-2000, 08:03 PM aai, it's 2pm here. Another 4 hours to go before sleep.
Has anybody figured tommie out?
Dylan 10-25-2000, 08:05 PM Sorry, just signed up to reveal my ID. I'm Bogus.
Coffee, sorry don't drink.
kunal 10-25-2000, 08:08 PM Im ever ready for that BC :) As long as your paying.. :D
Well Hello there Bogus, welcome aboard.
etLux 10-25-2000, 08:10 PM Wait... doesn't BC *always* pay? That's why I was hanging around this joint.
kunal 10-25-2000, 08:12 PM well BC???? I am new here.. So BC.. do you? :)
Dylan 10-25-2000, 08:15 PM Suppose you going to ask me why were you "Bogus"
Tommie originally posted a message on my BBS wanting to know whether I was interested in a special offer but kept on hiding the URL and promising to email me, so I managed to trace him (or her) to this BBS.
Shortly afterwards I received an email from him (her).
That's how I picked up on the suspicious email addresses.
Dylan 10-25-2000, 08:20 PM Thanks for the welcome aboard.
I've been "Dylan Guest" for quite a while.
kunal 10-25-2000, 08:20 PM Private eye Dylan :)
Dylan 10-25-2000, 08:30 PM Yep! One of the many things I do.

Dylan 10-26-2000, 08:46 AM Yes, I'm a T. Med Pract (traditional doctor, not medicine) and hypnotherapist (abbreviated "hyp")
excalibur 10-26-2000, 09:52 AM Seems a good price. I am always leary of prepaid long contracts. What if the service is not what you expected Can you get out?
Personally i like the month to month deals It keeps the hosting company honest. We buy our bandwidth like that so the provider HAS to maintain the service standard or run the real risk of losing a large customer.
etLux 10-26-2000, 10:15 AM I agree with excalibur on the matter of long-term contracts. Early in the game, I got burned on a couple of these. The 'Net's a volatile economic environment. Both your needs and what a provider has to do to remain profitable can change rapidly, so getting "locked in" often isn't a great idea on either side of the wire.
Rehan 10-31-2000, 02:03 PM Has anyone signed up with them? Any comments?
"PaulJ" posted some info earlier, but I find it suspicious because he used Anonymizer to hide his IP address...
Chicken 10-31-2000, 04:20 PM I think you'd be better off ignoring PaulJ and tommie's posts. If you can find anything on them other than that...

Best regards
jtan15 11-04-2000, 11:39 AM Jeez, what a long topic. Too bad I'm getting in on it too late. :)
I think that Microsoft change had to do with the attack recently. Microsoft said that their source code was downloaded for Windows platforms, and possibly modified. Just think ... if crackers have the source code to Win2K now and find one small error in it, everyone using it could be doomed. Furthermore, they could have altered the source code to add a small unnoticable change which would let them take control in future releases.
That's why I use Linux. ;)
Marcos,
If you read through the thread you'll realise why - it just seems too good to be true. And on the Net, if it's too good to be true, it is.
I suggest you look at http://www.webexpose.net or http://www.catalog.com for your needs.
