View Full Version : Web Hosting & College
netsolutions 11-24-2001, 06:42 AM Can you get a college degree in web hosting? If not don't you think they should have that. I know they have systems administration but I mean real web hosting. Teach about the hosting market and sales. Teach people PROPER TECHNICAL SUPPORT! Stuff like that
mdrussell 11-24-2001, 07:29 AM It would be hard to structure the degree course, because the hosting industry is changing so rapidly...
And what exactly would the degree involve? Basically just a sys admin degree, mixed with some accountancy etc.... a little pointless imo.

Yes but so is the computer industry in general and they offer degrees in that.
edude 11-24-2001, 07:34 AM Yes you are spot on there :)
Platforms change, software does so on.....

There are degrees in IT, yeah, but I believe these are based on the origins of computing, and the theories behind it....

There is no theory behind computer technology anymore. As the technology changes the theory changes with it. If it didn't we wouldn't have gone from PI to PII to PIII to P4
mdrussell 11-24-2001, 07:45 AM netsolutions, I am afraid you are wrong. The technology changes (advances) allowing us to go from the Pentium to the Pentium 4. The basic theory, and principles behind the cpu remain the same.
Lawrence 11-24-2001, 08:17 AM If anything, the technology changes as the thoery changes, not the other way around. Otherwise you'd be banging things together and then making up some excuse as to how it works... :D
But at the same time, theory doesn't often change. It more often builds on previous theory. The IT industry is certainly still based on the same core theory. The progress in processors to date, as far as I'm aware, has mainly been in fitting as many transistors as you can into as little a space as you can. Even with these new molecular ideas they're coming up with, it's still the same philosophy, with a lot of chemistry thrown in as well of course!

Most (better) colleges don't have purely vocational majors anyway. In fact, I've never really met anyone with a degree in system administration (and I've met a lot of sysadmins). Most major in more general areas like computer science or computer engineering.
Maybe some of the technical schools that advertise on TV will offer something along the lines you're talking about, but I don't think it will go mainstream anytime soon.
Rewdog 11-24-2001, 07:18 PM Check if your college offers Computer Information Systems. Its about half computers half business :)
mahinder 11-24-2001, 07:35 PM what about adding compulsory project at WHT :D
Check out the community colleges in your area. Many of them have 2-year degree programs or certification programs with the classes you want. Or, alternatively, take a 2-year sysadmin program & while you are at it, take some classes on the side on small business, business administration, and accounting. Who cares what the piece of paper on the wall says? You're in this to be a better webhost, right? Find the classes that will make that happen.
