jtan15 10-24-2000, 02:56 PM Vince,
Well, let me ask a few things. Have you registered the nameservers at Network Solutions yet? Or are you just having trouble setting them up in the Cobalt? Once answering these, I could help you more specifically. :)
Félix C.Courtemanche 10-24-2000, 09:40 PM Recipe to set up 2 name servers on the same RAQ (not recommended because if the server goes down you have no more DNS)
go to your domain's registrar and request 2 name servers, point them at their future IP. One can be shared by your main homepage and another one for another of your web page... or could be set on a dedicated IP, either will work.
example:
ns1.can-host.com
24.215.1.6
ns2.can-host.com
24.215.1.7
Once this step is done, log in your RAQ in the /admin CP, the 'Control Panel' section. Once there, click on the 'network' link.
There, you will see the host & server name, primary and secondary DNS, gateway, etc, etc.
Only modify the DNS and point them to your 2 selected IP (.6 and .7 in my case)
Once that is done, go back in the 'services', make sure that the check beside 'Domain Name System (DNS) Server' is there.
Now is the time to create your first records, the 2 ns1 & ns2 records you made at your registrar.
select Add... Address (A) Records, enter ns1 or ns2 as the host, the domain and the IP it should points to. Check automated reverse records creation.
Then... I suppose that you know how to operate the DNS server so I won'T explain that :)
You can also make sure that in Add... server settings your forwarding servers (if needed) are set. You basically need that if you are behind a firewall.
I hope this helps!
Vince. 11-12-2000, 03:31 AM No I dont know about how to operate a DNS Server so if maybe you can explain that also I shall be greatfull.
Vince if you would leave us and email adress we can help you more. seeing how your new to all of this it could take some time to walk you thru this and it would be better done on icq or email.
cbaker17 11-12-2000, 04:04 PM Even better Yet Vince register and stick around the forum, theres alot of people who would love to help you out.

brainbox 11-14-2000, 02:03 PM Hi,
I also have this problem,
I have registered two dns with network solutions.
We'll call them
ns1.mydomain.net 208.xxx.xx.001
ns2.mydomain.com 208.xxx.xx.002
Now I go into my raq's control panel, and choose network,
I have
in the network general settings:
Host Name: ns1
domain name mydomain.net
Primary dns 208.xxx.xx.001
2nd dns 208.xxx.xx.002
IP address: same as prinary dns 208.xxx.xx.001
I click the button to save the changes.
I then go to dns paramaters and find the following:
DNS Settings for mydomain.net
Start of Authority (SOA) Configuration
ns1.mydomain.net 208.xxx.xx.xx1
Then in the select domains or network pull down box I choose the 2nd name of
ns2.mydomain.com
and the info is as follows:
DNS Settings for ns2.mydomain.com
ns2.mydomain.com is served by IP address 208.xxx.xx.002
Now when trying to get to http://www.mydomain.com nada, zilch nothing, dns error.
I have mydomain.com setup as a virtual account on 208.xxx.xx.003 but still nothing.
Apparently I've set this thing up wrong and am highly frustrated by this. Can someone help me out.
Thanks
Bbox
After Afair:
Ok, I got things setup correctly, apparently I dont know how to manage the dns, so I put in mydomain.com as an A record and now it resoves, so I assume that I must not only make a virutal site, but must add the record as an A record to the system.
So, if I now have two dns on the same server.
For example:
ns1.mydomain.net
ns2.mydomain.com
Must I also add the A record of a new virtual domain to both of those so that it resolves correctly.
I talked to NetSolutions, and they said it was imperative that I have both dns up and running, so I assume that I must add an A record for each virtual domain that I setup, is this correct?
Thanks

Setting Dns on Raqs*
Ok first things first we assume you have yourname.com and you have registered your name servers (example) ns.yourname.com and your main ip address, ns1.yourname.com and your secondary ip address, if not this is the first thing you need to do. Keep in mind it can take up 72 hours for dns to update and your name servers to take affect. If done like above your name servers will be ns.yourname.com /main ip# and ns1.yourname.com /secondary ip#*
Ok now log in to your raq and create a virtual site make it host name www and domain name would be yourname.com and your main ip#.
Next you need to create a second virtual site this is a dummy site but you have to have it for it to work make it host name ns and domain name would be yourname.com and your secondary ip#
Ok now that that is done click on the control panel link and the network link up top.
#1 In the Host Name type www
#2 In the Domain Name that would be yourname.com
#3 In the Primary DNS Server Address this would be your main ip# to the server.
#4 In the Secondary DNS Server Address this would be the ip# you gave to ns.yourname.com
The rest of the settings should be already set if not contact your provider for that info.
With all of that set make sure you click save changes.
Then the next thing to do is set all the records for http://www.yourname.com and ns.yourname.com
I wont go in to that for now I think it was covered in a post above but this should get the dns running on your server.

Every virtual site you add to the server has to have and A record for it to work.

Thanks, that was our problem apparently, but does it matter whether I add it under which ns1 or ns2 record that I have listed, or add not, which would be better? Adding it under the first primary dns or secondary?
I dont think it's possible to do both since it will tell you that a record already exists.
Thanks for the help
Bbox
Set it under the main ns ip# for shared hosting or you can give it its own dedicated ip# if you have extras both will work.
brainbox 11-14-2000, 07:30 PM Okie Dokie, im apparently half way there.
The domain now comes up in the browser when I type in http://www.mydomain.com but does not comeup in the browser when I type in just mydomain.com
I have setup A records for both, the http://www.domain.com and domain.com
So, Im now at a loss as to why this is happening.
Thanks for the help peoples, it's much appreciated.
Bbox
OK i am not sure why its doing that but go back in and make sure you have www in the host name and yourname.com in the Domain Name.
Now do the same thing all over and leave the Host Name blank and just put in the Domain Name yourname.com
That should work
brainbox 11-14-2000, 08:34 PM Okay, worked it all out, I deleted everyting I had done so far, and just went to appendix D of the raq manual and followed through it all over again, this time making sure that I did everythign exactly like they had in the photos.
Mmmmmm GUI in a manual makes it a lot easier than trying to figure out what the heck they mean when they write the manual in chinese. ;-)
