View Full Version : Transfering clients to a new server
Hello,
I am currently trying to transfer around 80 clients from a dedicated server in NOC "A" to a colocated server in NOC "B". I have searched WHT for information regarding how to do this successfully without luck. I wish to transfer all clients, while maintaing all e-mail/cpanel/whm settings and files. All pertinent information to their account I wish to transfer, so that the clients can't even tell anything has been changed. (Except for the obvious exception of their IP would change). Does any smart and savvy tech know how exactly to go about this? I would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.
Also, I have read around, and am almost positive, but am I correct in saying that when I move these users, they do not have to change their DNS setting with their registrar, since the alpha name (ns.diatone.net and ns2.diatone.net) wouldn't change, and the registrars would realize this, and automatically update the IP's for the name servers?
Thank you for any help offered.
netsolutions 11-24-2001, 01:40 AM You could use a migration utility for this the only problem I can see is that your IP addresses might change and that would obviously create a problem.
What are some migration utilities you would recommend? Also, I don't see why clients IP's changing would create a problem. I'm sure 99% of the customers dont use or even notice their IP, or would care if it changed.
netsolutions 11-24-2001, 02:07 AM The question is what if they do?
edude 11-24-2001, 03:43 AM As i have already went through a server migration, GOOD LUCK!, you'll need it :stickout :stickout
Hostexp, Well if you have, then can you please be kind and give me some pointers, or tell me where you found the information on how to do it. I would really appreciate it.
Synergy 11-25-2001, 02:29 AM Hi, from my experiences... The best thing is to notify all your clients about the migration and have them fill out a form with the following questions:
Are they running any scripts setted up using the IP?
Do they update their site everyday with crucial information?
Do they have a database installed?
Modified the MX or CNAME?
If its a yes for any of the above, I suggest moving these first... I personally think its more save moving it site by site. You have to be honest with your clients..... As its not likely to cause any downtime on the move in the first place.

I agree to that. I went through that before but i really don't trust any migration utility. so i moved every site manually (30 a day). This could save you lot's of time instead of troubleshooting "migrated" sites afterwards. My clients got contacted 2-3 weeks before the date of the site move.
bobcares 11-26-2001, 04:45 AM You could write such a script in c or perl. It is not very tough. We done a similar work some time back . The only difference was that we did a script to convert from cpanel We are now working on an alabanza to cpanel script. What one basically does is transfer the /home/user directory, transfer the mail, ftp settings and rewrite the name server records. No need to change the name server info with the domain registrar. Only thing in the name record change is when people have added or modifed the MX, CNAME records (e.g. when they use everyone.net/bigmailbox etc... )
However, as pointed out earlier, you must notify the clients before the shift and also take a backup.... It is a must.
Have a great day :)

mercury 11-26-2001, 06:06 AM what migration utility do you use?
Need to transfer 300 clients from a server into another server....
both with CPanel
anyone know a goos utility ?
Thanks
bobcares 11-26-2001, 06:30 AM Hi!
When we had searched for it we did not get any on the web.... :( So we developed our own script for our puspose that time.
However I suggest you can even go for a manual migration. At 30 a day it would take only 10 days for 300 hosts. If you put 10 people on the job it'll take only 3 days... :)
To develop it or get it developed by anyone it would take over 15 days any way + it would cost $$$.
Why waste money when you can do it manually. Unless you intend to use/sell this script regularly.
I wish you all the very best..... :)

Do you mean you are selling such a script? ;)
bobcares 11-28-2001, 01:13 AM Hi!
We are not selling it. We had developed it for a client some time back.... :)
