View Full Version : Host reviews
Macster 10-24-2000, 08:24 AM What sites do you think are the best for finding reviews of hosting companies? From my experience, most of the reviews I found online were negative ones. Since I am pleased with my hosting company, I would like to leave some positive reviews about them.
Thanks -
Mac
MattF 10-24-2000, 08:37 AM Before people start to flame Host Investigator for reviews not appearing for ages, this is due to us not having a script verify the SQL record (one field needs triggered to Y), which I will work one again sometime. I am also in the process of building a new back-end so hence I've sort-of neglected Host Investigator. Don't worry if you've submitted a review to Host Investigator, it will appear, eventually. I promise. :)
Macster,
It's probably because the negative reviews were 75-90% true ;)
In the ideal world, all reviews would be 100% factual and hosts don't sneakily post reviews. Of course, this isn't the ideal world - it's the real world and you're gonna get occasional skullduggery (on both sides of the fence).
That's probably why hardly anyone's responded to this thread (and I usually don't make a recommendation either).
Brian Farkas 10-24-2000, 10:39 PM You could try something like hostsearch.com or hostinvestigator.com... However, many people do not rely on these reviews very much because, as was pointed out, sometimes dishonest hosts will write reviews about their own company.
You might have better luck in forums, but be sure to post a valid email and the domain that you host with them.
Hope this helps.
Brian
Brendan at HostRocket 10-25-2000, 01:49 AM When looking at reviews, check for ones that actually have url's of sites hosted on their host's servers. Those ones are generally legitimate.

Macster 10-25-2000, 07:58 AM Oh well.
Thanks for the responses. I guess I will just continue to recommend my host when people ask for help. It's just kind of sad that there aren't any reliable sites. I know I had to weed out tons of sites that ranked hosts based on how much they paid to be on the list, instead of by how they actually performed. It just pays to do some research.
Thanks again!
That's what these forums are for, ain't it? ;)
etLux 10-25-2000, 09:58 AM Probably the best of all ways to choose a host is on the recommendation of another (experienced!) webmaster, preferrably one who has a fairly busy site.
I made the error of choosing HostRocket.com on the basis of reviews.

WHAT PROBLEM DID U HAVE WITH hostrocket??????????????????
Ouch, my ears are hurting a bit here...
Please observe Netiquette and avoid the use of CAPS as it's the equivalent of SHOUTING on the Net. Thank you.
Carrie Dawn 11-05-2000, 06:03 AM We have one site on Host Rocket and another on GXHosting.
Our Host Rocket site has never gone down, their tech support has been superb when we had a question. (And this has been at all hours of the night.)
For the price and value, they do a wonderful job. Especially, considering similar competitors offering inexpensive Albanza servers aren't so reliable.
Feel free to e-mail if you have questions. I would be happy to share out web url with you if you want to see a site hosted on Host Rocket
Ybandy 11-06-2000, 11:20 PM You may also try sitepoint.com forums as well. You may get good suggestions from there. And try hostinvestigator.com. Also checkout server response times under Network Tools at the buttom left corner. Good luck

Ultra_Tom 11-07-2000, 07:53 AM If you want to know more about hosts check out Web Host Directory Host Reviews. They are more like Host Interviews and are condcted with some senior player in the company. It'll give you a feel of who is running the hosting company that your site depends on.
Personally, I take all reviews with a pinch of salt. Like people said, Forums are the best.
