View Full Version : Hosting with extra bandwidth
DatabasedWeb 10-24-2000, 08:13 AM Hi,
I have a site to host that has a lot of audio in RealAudio format. I am looking for a reliable hosting service for this site. Usually, I would use Cedant.com but since I expect the bandwidth requirement for the audio files to be large, I am looking for a host with more bandwidth. Also, I need a large number of email POP boxes (>100).
I have been looking into the following hosts:
http://www.websitesource.com
http://www.hostrocket.com
http://www.syonic.com
What do you think of them? They all offer good space and bandwidth for a reasonable cost (I am looking for something <$20 as this is a non-profit site). Are there other good ones that have better offers than these?
And, being listed on BBBOnline would be nice.
Also, I need to be able to pay with a bank draft or Western Union Money Order as I am outside the U.S.
I will appreciate any help that you guys can offer...
Regards.

Brendan at HostRocket 10-24-2000, 05:16 PM Hi,
One thing you may want to consider is looking for a host with realserver. This is a feature we have not set up on our boxes yet.

Fiber 10-24-2000, 05:31 PM I have alot to say, but I'd prefer not to say at, as no one ever agrees with anyone. In fact I never post anymore because of it.
You can sureley e-mail me.

The host will need to have realserver installed otherwise users will not be able to hear the audio without downloading the files. I hope I am correct in my assumption. That leaves the other two. Are there any others that you guys would advise of.
EDIT: I just had a chat a DynastyHost and they told me that I did not need to have realserver installed for RealAudio streaming. I need it only for live broadcasts. So does it mean that I can host at HostRocket also as I will be uploading ram files for the visitors to hear from and not doing a live broadcast.
Meanwhile, I received an email from jtan.com. They provide unlimited web space with 10GB of transer. I know that I should be wary of those promising unlimited web space but they are a member of BBBOnline. Should I consider them or keep looking.
Regards.

Chicken 10-25-2000, 04:49 PM Pretty much any host allows you to http stream RealAudio, so yep, hostrocket would do the trick. I'm surprised that Vince (jtan) offers unlimited space. I've never checked out that word, but 'round here we don't like to talk about "ulmimited".
Chicken boy, if you did a search for posts by Vincent P. you'll see his explanations for 'unlimited HDD space'....

"ulmimited" ??? You'd think I was drunk?! Ahhh anyway, I can't remember it but will put that on the 2do list.
jtan15 10-25-2000, 09:00 PM Actually, I'd like to clear up on this situation. I recently talked my boss into changing it. We are currently rewording the web site to offer 500MB of web space, to make it sound more feasible (as was earlier suggested). Of course if you need more than 500MB, we'll give it to you, but that will be our new limit. Just wanted to let you all know. :)
DanielP 10-25-2000, 09:22 PM WHOO HOO HURRAY!!!!
*marks one more unlimited host off his list*
Yay Welcome to the hosting league :).
Ok that was a pretty useless post *lol*
Congrats for becoming more down to earth, if you want to offer more than 500 thats very cool, but it does give a base number for customers :).
Fiber 10-25-2000, 09:35 PM Well, RealServer is for "live" events. Lets say you do an online radio, then you would use RealServer. Any host supports http streaming, like chicken said.
However, no ones ever right. Your wrong, and add this etc, etc.
I just like to watch.
Yee-ha! Good on you Vincent :)
jtan15 10-25-2000, 10:15 PM LOL. :)
