I want to get a domain with private registration and was considering between Godaddy and Registerfly. I decided against Godaddy once I learned that there is a handling fee of $20 for snail mail sent to your domain to be mailed or faxed to you. I've never had a domain before but I would assume practically all the snail mail would be junk mail, but for any legit snail mail I would need sent to me, $20 a pop is too steep.

So do any of you Registerfly users out there know how much Registerfly charges to send important mail to you? I looked all over their website but I couldn't find any info on that.

Also, how much snail mail sent to a typical domain is junk? Upwards to 99%? I'm just curious. Thanks for any answers to any of this.

Are you trying to offer this domain up for sale....In my experience i havenot seen junk come to me in my domain name that much....over past five years maybe 2-3 times from credit card companies thats all... I personally like godaddy for it good customer service and reputation....why don't you use 'fax via email' software instead and once you feel the party is reliable then you can provide with your address or something....

No, I'm not going to sell it, I want to use it. I just don't want my street address and phone number in the Whois database. I'll certainly have an email address on the site for easy contact and I don't mind about having email in Whois because I can use a yahoo address or something for that. I just don't know if I would ever get important or legal snail mail sent to the street address in Whois and I don't want to have to pay $20 to receive it like on Godaddy. That's why I was wondering what Registryfly charges to forward snail mail.

If you use Godaddy's private registration service which is through DomainsByProxy, according to the FAQ they charge a handling fee of $20 to fax or mail you any snail mail sent to the address in Whois. The private registration gives DomainsByProxy's street address in Whois instead of the registrants so as to keep the registrant's private info private.

Do you mean, if and when someone like a spammer gets your address from the whois info, and sends junk mail that would normally go to you, goes to godaddy instead?

I don't know what godaddy would do with that mail but are you sure they charge you $20 to relay it to you? I've never heard anything like that.

i think enom does it for free, they have answering machine to save messages and forward it for you, not sure about snail and fax messages though.

Ok, from what I understand, when Godaddy receives mail to the private whois address, (their address), they just delete it with your approval in the terms and conditions.

If you get a legal type notice, they will let you know and you can accept or decline it.

If you accept it, they will send it to you for a fee.

Most of the services are supposed to forward snail mail and this should be inclusive of legal notices. I think if you get an egregious amount of snail mail they will probbaly charge you for it.

Domains by Proxy would like to clarify its fee structure. First, we do not charge any fee for handling regular (junk) snail mail; we just discard it. Second, when we receive a legal complaint alleging your domain is involved in something it shouldn’t be, such as violating trademarks, copyrights, etc., we launch an investigation. We look at the site and contact the complaining party (usually an attorney) for all relevant details. If we determine that you are violating (or potentially violating) our TOS, only then do we charge a $20 fee. Here are some examples:

Example 1: Domains by Proxy receives a legal complaint by mail for one of your domains from attorneys for Rolex®. They say you’re selling counterfeit watches. We look at your site, and, lo and behold, you are indeed selling fake watches. You will be charged $20 for us to investigate and resolve this issue.

Example 2: We get a letter from an individual saying he “doesn’t like” content on your site, or claims that your site may violate our TOS at some future point. You would not be charged for this complaint.

Example 3: We get a letter from someone who would like to buy your domain name. We send you an email notifying you that we received a letter, a brief summary of its contents (someone would like to buy your domain), and contact information for the party who sent the letter. We give you all the information you need to contact the party directly. If you want a copy of the letter, you can pay to have it sent via fax or FedEx. If you don’t want the letter, you pay nothing.

The bottom line here is that if you’re not doing anything illegal or in violation of our agreements, you will not be charged. These examples don’t cover every circumstance that might be encountered, but are pretty representative of common occurrences.

To answer your other question, most privately registered domains get almost no mail. We get the occasional ad from a hosting company, or a Domain Registry of America letter, but that’s about it. We hope that this has clarified our fee structure.

In the few years that I have had domains registered with godaddy, the only snail mail i ever recieved was some scam that you had to pay $35 to advertise your domain or some crap like that.
