I was wondering what everyone has to say about Windows 2000. I am currently running NT on a Dell PowerApp.120 box. I am about to get another server...should I get Windows 2000 or Windows NT?
Thanks

Win2000 is NT5. I use 2000 and have had a few problems. I was told that a lot of features were eliminated in 2000 and added back for XP. You may want to consider XP. propain222 11-23-2001, 01:49 AM OK...point well taken. So if everyone could please give opinions on choosing NT 4, 2000, or XP for my next server that would be great. I do not think windows XP is a viable hosting solution, but I could be wrong. Thanx again. Quill 11-23-2001, 01:50 AM This forum is for hosting related. Your question should be redirected to Cobalt Raq forum or Technical & Security forum. :) propain222 11-23-2001, 02:22 AM I do not want to offend anyone, but in my opinion, it is a hosting related question because I need to know which OS is best for running a web hosting server. I am staying away from RAQ, but I will take your advice and try the tech. and sec. forum as well. Than. Chicken 11-23-2001, 02:37 AM Actually we have a hosting software forum which this has been moved to, now onto the topic. RackMy.com 11-23-2001, 07:44 AM I assume you mean NT4? Win2000 is NT5. I use 2000 and have had a few problems. I was told that a lot of features were eliminated in 2000 and added back for XP. You may want to consider XP.You should move up to W2K as it's a more stable/faster environment for web hosting. XP is not available in a Server version yet, but based upon tests, XP does not look like a good option. When placed under a very heavy load, XP is 4X slower than Windows 2000. Also, I have not hear about any features that were removed in W2K and added back to XP (Smear can you tell us some of them?). Hope that helps a little :) mattan 11-23-2001, 12:35 PM better IIS performance... and if you're thinking of offering ASP.net when it comes out (soon), then definitely go with Win2k kwimberl 11-23-2001, 01:16 PM My vote is for 2K Adv. Server for hosting applications. By the way, XP Server is not out yet. :-) flatron 11-23-2001, 01:19 PM Definitely win2k It's faster, stabler and more flexible than NT4 ( my main server has currently been up for a month without incident ). Besides which NT4 is old technology - why would customers go to an NT4 host and be restricted to an old version of ASP when they can get 2000 for the same price ? Any serious ( windows based ) developer is going to be working on win2k locally and won't want to rework a site they've developed to host on NT4. ckpeter 11-23-2001, 01:29 PM You should definitely go with windows 2000. For the obvious reasons: better performence, bug fix, the fact that it is the currently and supporting OS by microsoft, IIS 5, etc... The only reason(and this is a small one) you might want NT is if its a lot less. Windows XP cannot be used as a server. The next server coming is Windows.Net, it is currently in beta 3, due to (properly will delay) arrive sometimes in the middle of next year. Peter Anatole 11-23-2001, 01:30 PM http://www.freebsd.org :-)) ckpeter 11-23-2001, 01:50 PM Anatole, this is completely off-topic, the person is asking for recommendation on NT and Win2k, not which OS to use. (not to mention powerapp doesn't support freebsd directly, to my knowledge, only windows and linux) Peter propain222 11-23-2001, 04:27 PM I would like to thank everyone except Quill for the relevant advice. I am ordering toady with Win 2k advanced server. Thanks again! Anatole 11-23-2001, 04:41 PM 2ckpeter: I just tried to escape him from this mistake, that is why i gave him a little tip to visit freebsd.org, but he already ordered that Win%#^s 2000. 300 days uptime is normal for FreeBSD, cannot say the same about Windows NT. kwimberl 11-23-2001, 04:55 PM Glad to help, propain. :-) |
