View Full Version : Burlee.com worst host
PeterJUn21 11-22-2001, 10:23 PM Dear Customer:
This note is to inform you that your Web site exceeded its allotted portion of disk space in October.
For the extra 308 MB of disk space your site utilized, your account was charged $0.50 per extra MB.
$154 = Total Paid
If your balance is outstanding, your account may be deactivated after a grace period of five business days. Please note that, once deactivated, your account is subject to a $9.95 reactivation fee. As per our hosting contract, Burlee requires a current and active credit card on record at all times, so please send us your current billing information via email or by calling us today, toll-free, at 1-877-428-7533.
If this was not a temporary spike in traffic or file storage, but a welcomed trend of growth, then we recommend you upgrade to a higher plan, as it may prove more economical than paying for extra space and/or bandwidth every month. For plan prices and parameters, please see:
http://www.burlee.com/webhosting/index.asp
Also, they billed my credit card TWICE for this action and so far im waiting 1 hour and 18 minutes for there sales support via phone.
klisis 11-22-2001, 10:40 PM Well, it is wrong that they billed you twice but isn't the cause is on your side which you exceeded your allowed disk space?
This note is to inform you that your Web site exceeded its allotted portion of disk space in October.
For the extra 308 MB of disk space your site utilized, your account was charged $0.50 per extra MB.
You exceeded 308MB? How could you not know? I think this mess could have been prevented rather easy.
Or, did you really exceed 308MB?
addaction 11-22-2001, 11:00 PM They should not charge your CC for such a high amount in comparison to your monthly fee. They should inform you when you go over the traffic limit or shut down your site. It is a easy way to make money, or should we say stealing
I would find a new host fast.....
Anton
LiveTronix 11-22-2001, 11:01 PM Burlee is the worst host I paid 500+ in bandwidth fee's going barley over in 3 months I was about 4 gigs over (i was on unlimited plan, but to many downloads) 4 gigs = 500? Not from my count! Stay AWAY!
The worst part was they kept saying your getting a special offer and paying less then the regular .50/mb.
Oh yah, it also costs extra for www. to work infront of your domain!
addaction 11-22-2001, 11:11 PM I saw their site. That unlimited plan is joke. Who is behind this company? Are they active on WHT? Maybe they will show their face and explain how this plan fills their pockets.
:(
klisis 11-22-2001, 11:36 PM I believe so. I remember a user who asked a review for his website. Though I don't remember the user name.

:( Burlee is one of the oldest and largest web hosting companies around. From the sound of Burlee's e-mail, they've also got one of the oldest and largest pricing structures around.
I don't remember seeing anyone from Burlee posting here, but they've been mentioned many times (usually as a response to the question, "what hosting company has the best designed website?").
Peter, did you get any warning you were exceeding disk space, or did they just spring the bill on you?
PeterJUn21 11-23-2001, 12:51 AM No I didnt get any warnings, I asked them it wasnt fair cause they didnt warn me or anything. They rejected, and when I asked them that I would finally pay... They had areadly billed it on my ccard... TWICE
addaction 11-23-2001, 08:35 PM Did they refund the double charge? Otherwise consider a chargeback.
Also read their service contract real carefully. You might find a section that will help your claim in trying to get a full refund since they did not notify you.
LiveTronix 11-23-2001, 08:38 PM If someone does business with them you get what you pay for plus tos that is impossible to meet. most hosting companies give you what they say but the givens aren't mentioned it's dumb asking me to pay 3 dollars more a month for www. to work and a 30 dollar set up fee it's so easy to do!
thomas1 11-23-2001, 09:30 PM They are far too expensive and seem to be what NetSol is among registrars: outdated. ;)
As for the www. issue :
You may add a non "WWW" Web address for a small setup and monthly fee. The non "WWW" domain name will look like: http://mydomain.com and allow you to browse to your site without the "WWW". This will be added to your existing http://www.mydomain.com account.
Rewdog 11-23-2001, 10:47 PM Thats too bad :( Check out unlimband.com
Webdude 11-24-2001, 12:05 AM $.50 per meg? Dang...I'm waaay under charging! What do others charge??
Shawn (GEcom) 11-24-2001, 12:12 AM Wow, $500.00 a gig???
Im speechless...
addaction 11-24-2001, 12:17 AM I would definitely report this company to the better business bureau. First they offer "unlimited" traffic, then they come up with a deceptive agreement and then they charge much more than the norm.
I would not pay these charges.........

Im speechless... That's for disk space, not for data transfer (wasn't sure if you caught that or not). It's still up there though.
Peeps 11-24-2001, 01:27 AM Some things that come to my mind are
What plan were you on? If you were on their so-called unlimited plan, and followed their TOS, why are they charging you? If you weren't on that *cough*unlimited*cough* plan, which one did you have? Did you not realize how much space your site was taking up? I looked through their TOS very quickly, I'll admit, but I didn't see anything about the charges that would be posted except a note about sites that consumed 20% of resources or something like that.
Personally, I'd find another host who spelled things out a little more clearly and who didn't offer unlimited things that don't exist. That's just me, though.
bigmattyh 11-24-2001, 04:11 AM This is sort of the reason I left Burlee.
My account was $19.95/month, and for that, I got 100MB of disk space, and 1GB of transfer. I wanted the non-www name, and I wanted, well, a lot more disk space and transfer. To do that would mean about $40/month or more, and everything else costed extra, too. They nickel-and-dime you to death.
If you read the terms of their unlimited plan carefully, it has so many caveats that a reasonable person with a reasonably large website with reasonable goals for growth wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.
With that said, their support was pretty good. E-mail was always responded to within about 4 hours.
Despite the good personable service, I wasn't willing to pay the price. And I told them so in my farewell letter. Too bad.
PeterJUn21 11-24-2001, 09:38 PM Well it took me 7 replies before they FINALLY canceled it. They kept saying bunch of crud like "WE want you back as a customer we will upgrade your fees for free for the next available plan", "Our dedicated hosts are better than others", "We won blah blah awards for webhosting"....
and so on...
now im on a dedicated raq with rackshack.net
so far so good =)
PeterJUn21 01-05-2002, 10:02 PM guess what??? After thinking I was clear with the Burlee 'crisis' ... more trouble...
More 'extra' fines...
See the list of my credit card billing:
Oct 21 2001
Burlee Networks 114.80
Reason: SIgned up for 'Enchanced Account' Monthly Fee was 49.95 and setup fee was 49.95... Should add up to $99.90. Transfered domain myself, didnt sign up for anything else. No clue
why they took another 15 bucks...
Oct 29 2001
Burlee Networks 10.00
Reason: Had to pay 10 dollars for 'non-www' address,
which means the ability to type in blahblah.com instead of www.blahblah.com LOL!
Nov 16 2001
Burlee Networks 154.00
Reason: Monthly service costs 49.95, not 154 a month.
Nov 21 2001 (My Birthday LOL)
Burlee Netowrks 250.00
Reason: "extra fines" for extra disk space...
"Dear Customer:

BTW, they didnt even notify me that i was even overlimiting the disk space.
Dec 14 2001
Burlee Networks 250.00
Reason: "CHarged Twice"
I have canceled my services with Burlee in November and now I have signed up with Rackshack (good!). I still get emails from them(Burlee) about how they still want me to joing there service... Anyway, trust me, I have been using different webhosts through out my life- Hostway and Webhosting.com, but Burlee is the worst one I have ever expierenced.
And to Burlee (If any of you are reading this) I wouldnt have to spend my time posting this stupid message if you havent gaven me such a crappy servince.
This host is taking advantage of you. Dont pay. I wouldnt, there is lots of other hosting company's that will work out just great for you :).
puffy2518 01-08-2002, 03:11 PM It is one the worst hosting provider!
You want 'this' option -- you pay extra.
Oh ... you want that to be included in your site -- you pay extra.
You want to leave ... you still have to PAY! ...
They charge me again even when I have canceled the account with them. It was 2 days after I cancel the account that they charge to my CC.
Can I dispute the transaction with the CC company? Can burlee use their term of service to recourse the dispute charges?
onthecatwalk 01-08-2002, 03:19 PM they should reconsider a new URL..like maybe
www.majorripoff.com
if they offer unlimited plans, than I don't get it.
They sound like a very bad company to me, I would report them. Does it say in the TOS that they can bill your credit card for more than the monthly amount with out notifying you??
I don't know..time for a new host..if I did buisness like that i'd be in the unemployment line!!
you could buy your own server, service, and hire a guy to run it for the amount of fees they charge.
:flamethr: :eek2: :smokin:
ngc1977 01-08-2002, 04:00 PM It's very important to read the TOS prior to signing up for an account. My web site http://www.to-scorpio.com will only get up to 100 MB of disk based on the unlimited plan. Burlee's TOS states that web site hosting movie files, software, and large images will be allowed up to 100 MB of disk.
*****'s TOS states that at least 90% of all files including images, movies, software, and music must be linked within your own domain and can not be offloaded knowingly to other web sites. Additionally, my site will qualify up to 20 GIGS transfere and up to 3000 MB disk under the shared Linux special. CWI Hosting, my current host, has a similar TOS.
After signing up with a host, print the TOS and file a copy of your check or money order with the TOS. Should a host change the TOS, remind them of the contract (good while account is prepaid). If a host chooses to breach the contract, insist upon a full refund of set up fees and unused time. In must cases, such remedies will work. If not, file a complaint with the host's local BBB.
I hope this clears up some confusion regarding disk space and bandwidth. Also, when looking for a host, if they do not have a TOS online, I would not consider their services.
