View Full Version : newbie question, everyone.net
Newbie 10-22-2000, 11:48 PM I have multiple domains and would like to setup free email service with everyone.net. Do I have to host those multiple domains? or just the main one and change the DNS on the others? What is the good hosting company for this kind of service? Thank you in advance.
Do you mean set up all your domains with everyone.net? If so, you can use http://www.zoneedit.com and just point all the MX/CNAME records to Everyone.net - the instructions are provided when you sign up with them.
Newbir 10-23-2000, 12:38 AM BC, is it the same as mydomain.com? or different?
Thanks
It's pretty much the same as mydomain.com and more.... You don't have to pay for the DNS services :)
Newbie 10-23-2000, 09:13 AM So, I just need to change MX info, but for multiple domains, do I have to open multiple accounts in there? or just need to open one account? I've tried to find in FAQs, but couldn't find any, hope anybody here who has used their service can help me.
Thanks,
TheWingThing 10-23-2000, 10:49 AM BC,
Zoneedit.com's webforward services and their homepage site too seems to be down. I have domains with them using webforward and dunno what's wrong. I can't acecess my site that uses their webforward. The same site uses MX and CNAME of everyone.net (this too is handled at aoneedit) and it works fine.
Also, pinging and the FTP server of http://www.zoneedit.com (209.73.15.236) are working fine. I guess they have an NT server from the messages of their FTP server.
Is the webserver down or they are under some DoS attack? I'm clueless but my site is down.
Please help.

Chicken 10-23-2000, 12:59 PM Another free DNS service is centralinfo.net (there is no need to host the domains if you just want email through everyone.net, and you just sign up for one account at centralinfo, and add the domains).

1. You will have to open multiple accounts with everyone.net - one account per domain.
2. You will also have to host each of these multiple domains on a paid account. You cannot use free web space provided on free servers. There are two reasons why you will have to host your site with a paid account.
2a. This is because everyone.net prohibits any kind of frames other than their own on their email pages.
2b. They also prohibit any kind of external advertising on their free email service pages, other than in their own allocated advertising space. (However, you get 50% of this space for your own use. You could either link to a banner exchange or use your own ad rotation script.)
Learner
Chicken 10-23-2000, 04:59 PM Learner, unless he actually wants these domains to do anything (aside from being free email), he doesn't have to have the domains hosted. I'm not sure, but I think he just wants to offer free email using a few domain names.
Newbie 10-23-2000, 05:10 PM After reading Learner, I got confused. I'm going to build only one website, the rest of it just Email (more choices for my clients), nothing else. So as Learner said, I have to open multiple accounts, but only one domain is going to be developed. I hope my understanding is right.
Thanks all,
Chicken 10-23-2000, 05:29 PM Ok, if this is the case, then you'll need one domain hosted. Be sure to have the MX changed to everyone.net (if you arenit controlling it).
Then I recomend you signup for an account for DNS, at centralinfo.net - a DNS account mind you. From there, you will be able to DNS your other domains (point the other domains to your main domain, and MX them to everyone.net).
You will have to sign up for multiple domains through everyone.net, but you might as well get this all set up first, as everyone.net won't work until DNS is correct.
It might be good to check out everyone.net first, only to see what you *should* be setting the MX to (only if you don't already know). They have instructions on the site in case this is new to you. After you know, you don't have to go through all of that, and you can "pre-set it up" for all of the domains.
I'm making this sound more difficult than it really is... sure you get the point.
you have to use centralinfo's dns servers dont you? too bad they wont let you use customized ones
Chicken 10-23-2000, 08:03 PM I believe if you sign up with them as a reseller, you can get your own nameservers and use them. Not sure what all that'll run ya', but I believe it is an option.
jrichrds 10-24-2000, 12:38 PM The place I registered the domain and the place I host the domain are 2 different places. Who should I contact to do the MX and CNAME mods?
Thank you all for reply my post, it was me ;).
I'm using mydomain.com, that's great free service (they don't accept new member right now). I got an idea after seeing BC, Chicken and Learner's replies. I used my DNS service and set my domains' MX to sitemail.everyone.net (pre-setup as Chicken said). Then I'd opened accounts with them a day later. Bingo... now everything is all set, I'm just going to design a site, make a pull-down menu, let my guests choose whatever they want, those domains don't need to be hosted.
Thanks again for helping me.
Chicken 10-24-2000, 05:51 PM Good to see!
jrichrds 10-24-2000, 07:09 PM I got instructions from everyone.net about making MX changes, but nothing about CNAME changes. I need to have my web host make CNAME changes too if I want the plug-in e-mail to be at mail.mydomain.com and the forums to be at forums.mydomain.com, right? How should I tell my webhost to do this?

Huh? I didn't know that. Hope Chicken or somebody else can help. My thinking is, in mydomain.com, they have option of creating third level domain, so if I do nothing about CNAME, I just need to create mail.myname.com and then use stealth redirection to myname.every1.net. Is that another way?
Chicken 10-25-2000, 12:08 AM Yes, you should email your host requesting that they change MX records for your domain to point to everyone.net and have them create a CNAME pointing to siteurl.everyone.net and one pointing to ccommunity.everyone.net
Nam, although you can use mydomain for redirecting, using their paid services or centralinfo.net will allow you to make DNS modifications yourself.
Also note that everyone.net will tell you to point the CNAME to siteurl.everyone.net. (note the extra period at the end of everyone.net). In my experience, two of the DNS services I have used have added the period automatically, so there is no need to add one. In fact, if you do, the CNAME won't resolve.
Ohhh I forgot to add that you CAN'T just redirect to siteurl.everyone.net for this to work. I just realized what you were trying to do. You need to have a CNAME pointing to this that matches the one you signed up with at everyone.net (mine is mailbox.mydomainname.com). So I have a CNAME for 'mailbox' pointing to siteurl.everyone.net (just to clarify).

I got you Chicken, after editing :).
Yeah, instead of showing people the sign up link like: http://partners.everyone.net...blah blah, I set up a stealth redirection so when they sign up, it would show as mail.myexample.com. Wouldn't it look more professional? :). Well, but if they look at the status bar, they'll know... hahaha.
Thanks a bunch,
Nam
jrichrds 10-27-2000, 05:37 PM Chicken,
I was given no CNAME directions by everyone.net, only MX directions. And it seems that they've removed the information for "branded web address" (although they still have the link up top for that topic). Am I missing something, or is everyone.net no longer allowing branded web addresses? From your post, I take it that I can't just create a CNAME without first configuring something at everyone.net's end.
Chicken 10-27-2000, 08:04 PM You can set up the cname before hand, but just be sure you use the same one when you sign up at everyone.net but don't use 'mail' as in mail.yourdomain.com (for example, I have mailbox.domain.com as mine).
GordonH 10-28-2000, 06:26 AM Yes Annette
I am one of Everyone.net's longest standing customers (I think I was in the first 1000 and then had to change my number to 27221).
Anyway, they have discontinued the subdomain system for new customers, but you could use a framed redirection to put your log in page on freemail.yourdomain.com.
However, I normally put the log in form on a standard page in my web site anyway.
That way you could have yourdomain.com/maillogin.html or whatever.
Of all the sites I have done with everyone.net the most popular actually uses e-mail addresses like ourname.every1.net and has over 6000 members.
Its a funny old world, but sometimes the domain based e-mail is not what encourages people to take one of your addresses.

FYI: Everyone.net has discontinued their offerings of fully branded free email and URL direction. No branded email=no CNAME instructions.
So you can only offer mail with something like chooseaname.everyone.net ??? (Forget about masking this via other means for a second).
Chicken 10-28-2000, 12:38 PM I imagine this is probably due to them having to answer millions of, "how do I get this to work?" questions, rather than something else. Thnakx for pointing this change out!
