I'm waiting for a domain to become available.

If I do a whois on the domain it says it is not found, yet it is unavailable for registration.

Is this part of the normal domain_being_released cycle?

use http://www.freewho.com/checker/index.php to know when it should drop

if it passed the day 10AM - noon EST then most probably it dropped and got catched by someone else

try www.whois.sc/THENAME.XXX sometimes the registrar whois database doesn't show the correct information buy registry does.

use http://www.fasterwhois.com

to see who registered it.
