This must be my 3rd post about the nightmere that is rackshack.

Sometime last week a script fix.pl was run on my raq and appeared to nuke Postgresql and the Control Panel. RackShack said I ran it and broke it so fix it myself. I dont recall running this script and nobody else did, but anyway I couldnt trace who ran it.

So after trying a few things to fix it without any help from rackshack, seemed futile something was severly wrong. So I decided to try a reboot, after reboot everything crashed. No Apache or FTPd so I went in via SSH and backed up everything and requested a factory restore. (This was 2 days ago now)

They promised everything be taken care of by yesterday morning, they failed in getting close to that. About 4 PM the box actually got up, however appears the tech still had work to do on it and was inaccessible.

So at maybe 7 PM the server was usable, but a patch was run that crashed the control panel AGAIN. I could see in .bash_history a tech had gone in and patched it.

So after contacting them AGAIN a tech went in and ran fix.pl the script that orginally rackshack claimed to screw everything up in the first place. After asking the tech what he wa doing running the same script that caused the problem, he said "lol" and that the script orginally claimed by rackshack to wreck everything actually was harmless.

So now I am waiting on ANOTHER factory restore of my unit, customers I promised to have everything ready by yesterday are still waiting.

My suspicions are that a tech ran the scripts that orginally screwed everything up, I dont have any solid proof though. I would of never ran the set of scripts they claimed, they only other person that had root wouldnt of. There was Ev1 logons during the timeframe in witch I estimate everything got wrecked.

So have many mad customers and a dead raq at the moment :( The only reason I wouldnt bail out of rackshack along time ago is the price. I cant at this point afford a better provider. But if you can, go somewhere else you pay a bit extra bit you also get real support.

An old saying comes to mind

"You get what you pay for"

Wow. How long was the wait between the time you requested an OS restore and the actual restore? Did they charge you for an OS restore?

Did you request some support for your raq before this, or do you suspect that a tech just randomly went into your raq and ran that script?

I'm unfamiliar with this script, what does it do? Does this have something to do with that faulty apache update from cobalt?

By the way I noticed you were on rackshack. There are several keys on support and getting things fixed. The biggest key is who you get to give you support. ALWAYS go with RS-Brian. He is the best they have. The next best is Owen. Hope this comes useful on your next nightmare.

A word of advice: go on Sun's website, download the Raq restore cd, and whenever something breaks, just copy it off the cd and upload it to your server.

now that I have read through the first posts on that... I am the one that probably ran that fix.pl script on it and I Know that it is not a script that will ruin the GUI at all... when I ran that script it is one that rebuilds the siteadmin gui interface... but there are times that it helps the admin gui also... depending on what is wrong.
that much I am able to say for that script honestly. I have used it many times and it never brought down the server.
and when I ran that script the GUI was gone at that point in the first place.

I just went by what they emailed me about it hehe, they claimed at the time it crashed it.

But thanks for your help Brian actually getting the server up :)

driverdave: I wasnt charged for the OS restore luckily, I had requested support about the CP. Than a tech emailed me with a series of commands that executed a script "fix.pl" and "fix2.pl" and they claimed I executed them and wrecked the server basically and told me they cant support it. I had requested the server restore 2 days ago, they promised it by yesterday morning and slowly got pushed farther and farther back.

I no the techs at RackShack, or atleast RackShack-Brian want to do a good job, so I apreciate that. Maybe some internal support problems about getting the actual raq's maintained.

I must say that I have been with RackShack since July and I have never had any problems with them. They are always there in the chat room. When you need them and they are VERY quick to respond to problems. Be patient with them, they do a GREAT job. They have the IRC chat that is open 24/7 and there is always someone there to help. MOST other places don't offer anything close to this.

Thanks for the info, Will. Thats my worst case scenario, an OS restore at RackShack. I'd always been curious if there was a charge and how long it takes.

Humm, the right foot doesnt know what the left foot is doing at Rackshack?

Boy I would be pissed if a tech told me i ran a script which i didnt and it crashed a live machine.

Well, theres a difference, and from what it looks like, all these people that have been having problems of late with rackshack are able to get ahold of them, the difference for them is, having a tech actually do something about their problems, which from a few posts we have seen, have taken longer then what would be the normal for such cases.
