Which one is faster??? a colocation with 10MB connections or dedicated 256 kbps ???

What are the advantages & disadvantages of both the above??? I'm planning to host maybe about 1-3 domains only.

Well errrrr.... 10Mb/s burstable would be MUCH faster, as 256Kbps is capped. *But* this ofcourse depends on how many users are on the line. If the line is already saturated, I suppose it would be *possible* for the dedicated 256 to be faster, but I doubt it.

It is almost two totally different beasts. With one you are leasing a small line and the amount of bandwidth is limited by the pipe (you aren't charged by amount of data). The other is much wider, but you may be charged on how much data you move over a certain amount.

Like chicken said it depends. If you're looking at Tera-byte's shared colo plan where users share the 10mb connection then it all depends on the other users ussage. If they are heavy bandwidth eaters then it could definitely be slower than your own dedicated 256kbps line. It's a gamble. Call them a see if they'll give you an idea of the average use of the users currently sharing the 10mb line.

About the data transfer, i thought i'm still get charged for the data transfer even if it is dedicated??? Am i right in saying this???

The colo at tera-byte has been great! Very nice people to work with, and the service has been fantastic.

Data transfer- Yes, you are charged for the transfer (even if you are dedicated, especially if you are dedicated), but maybe not in the way you think. If you were to get the 256Kbps line, then you get to use everything that line can give you. It isn't burstable, so your traffic peaks and totals are limited by the line itself, and the line is what you pay for. You won't be paying for "X" GBs/mo. The listed amounts there are for reference (aprox. what that line could push per month of steady traffic). If you are close to reaching that amount or have heavy peaks then you need a bigger line (or the burstable shared plan).

Thanks for clarifications ..... if co-locate at $199 + lets say a bandwidth of 40GB at the cost of $80 .... so total is $280 ..

With $280, i could get a dedicated 512 Kbps (extra $40) and no worries about GB...... 512 K is about 0.5 MB and tera have 200++ servers sharing 10MB ... so i guess dedicated is still better...

The only worries that i have is that my website is unique in such a way that on weekend 8-11 pm (+8 GMT).... i will have a lot of visitors .... and other times very very little....

Due to time difference, 10MB might be better because when my visitors are trying to access my server, most ppl in USA will be sleeping and i guess tera host most website from US region. That is really a gamble.

There are greater concerns than the datapipe alone when you compare colocation to dedicated servers. I've got information on my site that can give you a more balanced view.
