I know that nobody really compares to RackShack but what is the closest? I don't care if the bandwidth goes down a lot or whatever. Who is second from RackShack?

What terms are you comparing Rackshack ?

Well, with its new 1 GHz/512 MB RAM machine with 300 GB monthly transfer for $99, which Robert promised to everyone should be available this Friday, I guess there is nothing you can compare to RackShack at the moment.

The only alternative is to co-locate: $35/U + $0.25/Gig of Cogent bandwidth will give you roughly the same price, if you co-locate at least 2 servers with Transoptics, or $35/U + $45/Mbps of Cogent will give you even better price, if you co-locate at least 8 servers with Affordable Colo.

RackShack's $299 setup fee is about half price of your own server.

Where is this Cogent place? What is the URL?

Depends on how well you deal with latency issues Cogent does have a lot of latency issues (So I've herd many times)

What about e-freeservers? Anyone still recommending them?

about the only solid negatives i have heard about rackshack are 1) their setup fee is a tad up there & 2) their monthly charge for RAM upgrades.

but anywho. there's a bigoogle more hosts listed in various places in the RAQ forum. search around. here's a few i have bookmarked from when i was looking for a new dedicated raq host.

http://www.serverrack.net/
> raq4i / 128mb RAM / 65gb bandwidth = $100 - $200 setup + $95 monthly. setup fee is negotiable(they're easy to work with like that).
>> one-time upgrade to 512mb RAM = around $90.

do they provide decent service?Sort of. If you don't have remote reboot port, it will take RackShack 24 hours to reboot (I know, I raised reboot tickets number of times). Which is I guess because they have 2,000 servers to manage.

Also the transfer speed between two servers on RackShack network varies. You can get 5 MB/s, if you are lucky, or 5 KB/s, if you are not. Think about this when purchasing the second server for backup purposes.

On positive side, they tend to charge less than they state. E.g. if you go above 300 GB they may not charge you for overage traffic (e.g. RackShack waived overage charges in August and September this year). Or, if you screwed up your server and request to restore it again after they just restored it a week ago, they may not charge you as well (officialy they have to charge $50 or something, but I was not charged). I like that.

Hey, for $99, that's not bad at all!

To me that place is horrible. You have to signup for 20 months. What if you found out after the first 2 or something that this wasn't for you? What if there service all of a sudden got really bad? They say they give you the server but after 20 months the thing would be so out of date what would be the point?

Sliced bread and hosting, yeah :D
I see many people recommending services they never used and therefore don't really know about it, so you have a very valid point.
But in the other hand sliced bread doesn't change so often as the quality of a hosting company :)

Just answer this. Who wants to signup with a service for 20 months with no way out but buying out the contract.

I thought you could get out of the contract, you just would not get the server.

Another company very similar to RackShack: CobaltHost (http://www.cobalthost.net/)

I haven't seen them mentioned on these boards. They also offer a Raq4i for $99/month with 300 GB (using Cogent among others, of course). AND...they also offer colocation for the same price; 1 Mbps average bandwidth is included in the $99/month fee for 1U.

humm, intresting.
Both look like that they have good networks (rackshack.net max ping 50 colbathost.com max ping 100)
However rackshack.net started to offer 1ghz duron 20gb HD 1/2gig ram in the sweet spot $99 a month. And the setup fee is only $50 more. Also for a bigger setup fee ($500) you either get a 1ghz durron with a gig of ram and 2-20gb HD's or a 1ghz P3 with .5gig of ram and 2-40gb HD's. There is only so much you can do with a RAQ, but with a machine like that, there is a lot lot more...
