View Full Version : What sites you run that take so much BW?
comphost 11-19-2001, 12:31 AM I was reading posts in the hosting requests form last few days,
And I am amazed at tall the requests for services needing
over 15gb bandwidth a month.
What are you guys hosting that requires so much bandwidth?
I see that most are looking for an incredible ficticious deal
in costs, which arises suspiscion since most sites that do
that much traffic make very good money. I could be wrong,
but Please help my clueless mind a bit if you can and tell
me what kinds of sites you guys are running :)
Marts 11-19-2001, 12:48 AM Hi,
Our company has some sites that are pushing extreme amounts of data.
Most of them are simply due to streaming video, live cams, or huge amounts of files to download. Also some of the sites are simply getting extreme hits eg. 1.5 millions unique hits a month.
Hope this helps,
Marty:D
We have customers that push a very large amount of bandwidth (not going to actually say who or how much.. but significant).
Most of the sites are gaming sites or music related sites. We also host a site that was listed as one of the top 100 websites by Yahoo!. Getting recognition like that will get you some serious traffic.
Asher S 11-19-2001, 07:04 AM we host quite a few mega-bandwidth sites. they're fan sites for racing games or gamming news sites. they're loaded with downloads and pics and uploads etc so they consume tons of bandwidth.
Regards,
Asher.
comphost 11-19-2001, 07:48 AM I guess these game sites are worse than adult sites hehe.
Don't know why so many of these sites are not willing to
pay 50-100.00/m at least for this kind of service.. With that much traffic, you would think they are bringing in hundreds a day
or at least they should be...... and they should at least be concerned if their site is there tommorow...
I guess the slower moving industries are not to adapted to the ways of marketing their sites yet. I know from experience in adult that 1gb of traffic should bring you minimum 25.00 income at least. If not your doing something wrong.. Oh well to each his own..
Thanks for the info and Enjoy
in my opinion, forum site might be a very consumed-bandwidth but very little profit. Unless you're sitepoint or WHT :).
Actually porn is BAD with bandwidth. I had one site using 13 MBit/s (almost 2 MB/s) for over 24 hrs before I gave him a call and asked him if he wanted me to lock him down. (Thats 130 GB in one day).
Asher S 11-19-2001, 08:45 AM Yeah i gotta agree with this ... forum sites do consume a lot of b/w. Most gamming sites that we host insist on using a forum too :) so double the usage i guess.

MarcD 11-19-2001, 11:10 AM Hehe
im guiltly of one of those high bandwith gaming sites
at least 60-80 gigs a month
arent we fun
Asher S 11-19-2001, 12:10 PM we certainly are ;)
high bandwidth = more profit for webhost :D
pgrote 11-20-2001, 02:28 AM How is it that forum sites use a lot of bandwidth?
Are we talking things like VBulletin?
Wouldn't the database access actually help limit the amount of data pushed?
Asher S 11-20-2001, 02:35 AM Not really..
forum sites consume tons of b/w because of all the browsing back and forth back and forth.

Exactly, people browse forums in and out sometimes just to see 1 reply, or want to see it again and again. Look at the news site like CNN, you go in, you look and the news, and you quit. 1 person in forum site might equal 10 surfers in news site, that's my guess.
MarcD 11-20-2001, 06:39 AM our site averages about 60 gigs a month it is a heavy file and forum site exactly like everyone is saying.
As far as the number of people and making money it is actually rather hard. We ran some adult ads for awhile that brought in about 40-50 bucks a month, have tried other advertisers and click programs but nothign really is generating that much income.
The best thing we do to keep the bw down is make sure all files are .ziped, and try and keep them as small as possible also using vb with mysql helps on bandwith a lot ikonboard and other cgi forums just dont cut it they are to slow in my eyes
=)
we are going to start selling games, and gaming computers in about a month as well as scripts and different webmaster tools for gaming whihc hopefully will help to start generating some income .
^^ my gaming site story
Janet 11-20-2001, 05:55 PM MarcD,
This may be a stupid question to you, but have you checked to see if mod_gzip is installed and configured with the right file extensions? If it hasn't, you could see big bandwidth savings by installing that module.
Mind if I ask how much it costs to run a site as popular as yours?
My friend runs a hobby site (with forum) that may have to go to a dedicated server, but he makes no money through the site. He says ad banner rates are so low that it's not worth having ads plastered on every page. That sounds pretty in line with what you said.
Well, if anyone has any suggestions on how to raise revenue to at least cover the costs of a dedicated server, I'd love to hear them.
MarcD 11-20-2001, 06:45 PM i cant really say how much i pay or what i get, i have a deal worked out with our host that helps us both out =)
The sad thing is the only way i was ever able to generate income with ads was with porn ads =(
If your friend does not have a paypal donate on the site i would suggest he does that we get donations every now and then and those are always very nice to get =)
the best thing he can do is try and look for sponsors or to sell his ad space instead of paying per click have him charge like 7 bucks per 1,000 ads shown.
Stuff like that is really all you can do.
The market value of online gaming is estimated at 2.7 billion for 2002 with 6% of this going to online game sites so some of this has to be going somewhere
phpwebhosting.com 11-22-2001, 03:28 AM Like everybody else our's are mainly
forum's - popular ones can easily do 10's of gig's a month
others - cam girls, ad networks
