Hello techies. I have a bunch of VHS tapes I want to convert to DVD, and I need some advice. What is the best way to do this? I see a couple of options: 1) I could buy one of those DVD recorders that hooks right to the TV. 2) I could buy a DVD burner and do it on my computer.

The problem with the #2 option is, how do I get the video from the VHS to the computer? I assume I would need to get some kind of video input device (I know that some graphics cards have this built in, but I don't have one of those). I am assuming that the #2 option would allow me more control over creating DVD menus, etc. (I am also assuming that the DVD burner would come with appropriate software and I wouldn't have to buy it). However, these are going to be for personal use so that's not that big a deal.

Anybody have any guidance/advice?

I have a standalone DVD Recorder under the TV now along with the VCR and TiVo. Love it! I considered adding the DVD-R to my computer but in the end I wanted a VCR replacement, something my wife could use as well as something I could use while reclining on the couch with the universal remote.

I have a iMac 17" w/ 1GB of Memory and a 160GB 7200RPM Firewire HD (For just Video) and a SuperDrive, a Canopus ADVC-100 for capturing from my MiniDV or from Analog inputs such as a VCR and Final Edit Pro HD ...

It's the best bang for your buck if you want to edit videos. It's pretty much the same config a professional I know uses. He get's 2,000 per produced min. But he's been doing it for about 20 years and does work for ESPN, NBC, CBS, CNN, etc ....
