View Full Version : Donhost - What happens after 50 Gig ?

OK, this is about Donhost.

I have already searched the forum and see that A LOT of people dislike it - anyway, that has NOTHING to do with my question.

Are you a reseller of Donhost?
Have you got enough clients to have used up the 50 gig limit on the reseller account? Then please read on, i need your help.

What happens if you use up the 50 gigabyte limit on a Donhost reseller account?
Can have another one set up so that you can add more clients on your systems?

I am asking because there are a minority of people who are with Donhost who say they have WELL over a hundred clients, - if that is the case, how do you put them on the 50 gig limit??

How can you add so many clients on that type of account - mainly cause i emailed Donhost, and asked them, what happens when you use up the 50 gig limit, and they said that they would "ask" (probably force) you to move to a dedicated server, cause your load your account would have on the system.
How crazy can that be, cause moving from a reseller account with 50 gig limit costing around £30 per month, to a Donhost dedicated server having 5-20 gig costing £90 - £390 a month - will mean that you will go bankrupt, i mean you will be paying for clients from your own pocket instead of making profits - how can this be, it doesn't add up. How can some of you donhost resellers have 100+ clients?

Hmm... you could end up with 100 or even 200 clients way before you reach 50 GB transfer. It all depends on what kind of clients you have.

Donhost does have a per GB price, if you exceed 50 GB. I beleive it's 15 pounds/GB

If you have many clients using mySQL, CGI, etc., than you should definitely look into dedicated servers. It doesn't need to be Donhost's server, you know...

The prices of data transfer in Europe are way higher than in US, so... It all depends what are you really after... Do you need to keep the donhost control panel (it IS great!)? Don't want to move clients?

I'm not sure what kind of advice are you seeking...?

If you just want to hear: "yes, you are not crazy, the difference between donhost's reseller and dedicated plans is huge"... well, I just said it. :D

I have not read about any restrictions on how many reseller accounts you can buy.

You can also limit bandwith use for each domain name, that should help you controll it and not go over the limit.

Transfer limit inside the cp is just a reminder to the customer and the administrator, not a hard limit. It won't stop the site from going over.

IMHO while there is no written limitation on how many reseller accounts one person has, I beleive Donhost, like any other provider, might contact you and say differently :D

Anayet: what's your concern? Are you reaching 50GB or are you just considering using Donhost and want to know what happens if...? Describe your situations some more if you want useful answers...

Donhost is using freeBSD, so there might be some way to throttle a specific account down to, let's say, 200 MB transfer per day...

I was just curious, cause although there was a lot of bad things being said about Donhost throughout the forum, i thought i'd give it a try, but then i asked them what happens when you use the resources given to you and you want to add more clients (but have no bandwidth/resources left) - and the answer they gave me, just made me think that signing up with them would be a BIG mistake - they expect you to go to a very EXPENSIVE dedicated server, especially when you have a lot of clients.
It wouldn't add up - 20 gig bandwidth for £390 (about $550) is just a crazy price.

So thats why i wanted to know how resellers on donhost - who have a lot (as in 100+) clients manage?

I guess to start up this might be an ok package, but can someone help me with something else, when you decide to leave a reseller and set up your biz on your own servers, how would you go about doing it?
How would you transfer all the client files, folders, settings, domains etc etc

And also, why do i keep on reading people on this forum say things about there servers crashing and them having to fix it - saying it happens quite often BUT when you check the sites, you read that they say 99.9% uptime and stuff - how can this be.

Thanks

I agree that the data transfer price at Donhost is a bit much ;) for present market conditions. I don't see how they have any customers signing up for dedicated servers at that prices.

Is anybody renting a server with them? Any deals? It's great that the cp is included but data transfer prices... ouch!

When we used to have a reseller account with Donhost, we asked the question "What would happen if we used the 50GB" and we were told that if you consistantly used the 50GB then they wouldnt really want us on their server.

- £45 a month for 50GB doesnt make sense and I wouldnt recommend trying to use that amount with Donhost, as they gave the impression to us that they would just get rid of your account.

20GB bandwidth & a server in the UK would not cost £390 per month, with a lot of UK companies it would be at least half this cost
