View Full Version : Hosts shut down?
mantra 11-18-2001, 07:02 PM How can anyone rely on any hosts nowadays? I actually thought of going with ReflexHost.net for my reseller plan, but went with VO instead. I thought they had some sort of a good reputation, but it's just little things that got in there way.
Are the people that work at these web hosting companies not satisfied with their job? What is it that leads them to quit and argue with management?
I mean we can all host our sites on big name hosts, but we all know the service we get with such hosts as *****.com and dellz.com. So where can we turn to for quality, reliable hosting.
Well, this is just my 2 cents. Please feel free to add your thoughts about the disappearing hosts.
The companies that are going out of business are mostly ran by two or three people. So if they only have one person with technical knowledge, and he quits, then most likely the whole company shuts down. I'm sure if Daniel quits then VO will run into trouble.
Mefod 11-18-2001, 07:28 PM VO?
what company is that?

klisis 11-18-2001, 08:02 PM Large companies like communitech, fast.net, ***** and Verio won't go out of business easy.

If one support tech quits I doubt they will loose any business. Plust they have multi million budgets.
Well, can't those small companies get an other tech. Or even hire one fo the time being. Is their profit so low they can't fall back on some reserves in bad times??
Maybe they should look at their business plan??
Locutus 11-18-2001, 09:13 PM I totally agree.
Besides, how can a host get away with running a webhosting business with only 1 tech guy?
You would have thought the others would at least have some technical knowledge to keep the business running.
If they give up so easily just because 1 employee leaves, it makes you think whether the hosting business is going to turn out like the isp business i.e. hundreds of cowboy outfits only interested in taking your money, then shutting shop :(

Because that one support tech is a friend or the second owner. They don't know what it's like paying a real support tech to work full time.
There is nothing wrong with having one support guy as long as everything is running smooth.
AH-Tina 11-18-2001, 09:50 PM Another reason is when there's one or two guys running the company - tech support is easy for the first few hundred customers. With the mind-set that "this is easy money!" - they lower their prices, to get more customers. More and more customers demand more and more support...and it starts to be not-so-easy-money.
Guess what? Now they don't have the budget to hire a REAL support staff. It actually begins to seem like real work and they decide to close up shop and do something else.
I've seen this happen so many times it's not even funny.

Lurleene 11-18-2001, 11:25 PM $38k/year (or whatever) to hire a new tech guy/girl will eat heavily into a lot of hosts' profit.

Profit? You mean profit? What's that?
;)
DanielP 11-20-2001, 01:08 AM Hey now! heh, I can quit if I want to and the company will be fine, actually thats one of the first issues we addressed, what everyone is saying here is correct, in a small company you usually have very large points of failures if one person leaves, but VO has passed that point, so *sniff* I could quit and wouldn't be missed a whole lot *sniff* :D But that does not mean I am going to quit of course , just means a little less work :D
We now have *racks brain and counts* 12 people working for us, so were not in bad shape :)
