In terms of size, assets, customers, yada yada yada... basically everything!

Probably Verio. They have a LARGE percentage of the market.

I'm wondering if it's not Interland, now that they have merged with HostPro. I took a look at the Interland website and they're claiming they're the largest (of "business-class Web hosting solutions" anyway): http://www.interland.com/about10.asp

I would say Verio, in terms of assets anyway.

I would also have to say Verio.

But you also have to include AT&T, WorldComm, and Intel. All of them are the big data serving networks.

I mean, WorldComm owns UU-NET, and they have many data centers throughout the world. Not to mention 2200 dialup lines, in the USA alone.

AT&T is serving most of the "big" businesses and also is doing alot of work with their current long distance customers. I think people really feel good about going to web hosting with a company like AT&T because they are huge, and have been around for awhile. They wont just go out of business one day.

Intel has also been building up their presence in the webhosting industry and now they have 11 data centers around the USA and other parts of the world. They are manufacturing all the servers, so its probably a big plus for them since the hardware costs would be very minimal.

Also, VERIO is no longer that company, it was bought out by NTT. So techincally, there is no VERIO, Inc.

Alright, thats my views on the big boy's out there.

Verio has the largest market share of any host at around 8% of the market.

VERIO is the biggest.. They get someone like every other minute or something (I forget the exact claim).

Let me get that many customers for about 5 months and I will be a happy person.

They say they get a new customer every 5 minutes. So if I did my math right that would be 288 signups per day.

I see everyone saying Verio is the largest - does that mean best???

I am looking for a new host and am considering at the moment your-site and aletia.

Does anyone have any favorable or especially unfavorable comments regarding these two hosts?

Thanks in advance.

Aletia is great. I'm with them now and I have no complaints at all. Infact, their icq support is helping me right now. Aletia is a great company. :)

Verio isn't a US company anymore? then which country does it belong to?

They say they get a new customer every 5 minutes. So if I did my math right that would be 288 signups per day.

I wonder how much money they allocate for their advertising campaign to get such a huge amount of customers per day. How about Hostway, I heard they're on the top 3.

In Interland "About Us" page, they self-proclaim that they're the world largest hosting provider with over 300.000 customers

Hire more people, you can afford that because now you have so much money to spend since you're big and numero uno in hosting industry. :emlaugh:

It was bought by NTT, a ridiculously large Japanese Telecom.

This thread is about largest hosts, not those with the best features or service :D (we can reserve that for another thread)

Yes, thats true, that Verio is now a Japanese based company, that only has field offices/data centers in the USA. The only problem with Verio is that they do not own the fiber lines like Qwest and WorldComm do.

This is why I feel that Qwest, WorldComm, AT&T, and the other broadband/old guy companies are on the top of the industry. I mean, they can really secure peoples trust with their billion dollar stock offerings. Also, I heard that the Qwest company has invested over 60 billion in fiber lines, servers, and hosting goods.

With an investment that large, its hard to realize that a reseller or purchaser of the lines would be bigger than the isp/provider. I mean, interland or verio would not exist if it were not for World-Comm and Qwest to enpower them.

That's not such a big deal. And Verio is still a "real" company that just happens to be owned by a large foreign monopoly.

And Worldcom and Qwest wouldn't exist if they didn't have customers, either. Both sides need each other. If there were no Worldcom or Qwest, there would be some other network backbone (otherwise there is no Internet). And if there were no Interland, there would be some other mega-roll-up host.

I have forgotten where I read this, perhaps hostindex, said that XO is one of the oldest web hosting company in the states. They used to be concentric if I'm not mistaken.

Then there's also Hostway.com which has been around for a while, and has a lot of positive comments on them. My friend told me that they're on the top 3. Might be wrong though

It isn't hard to dig around and find out which domain names are oldest. For example, hostway.com was registered January 22, 1998. concentric.net was registered February 24, 1995; I'm not sure they originally focused on Web hosting, though, rather than selling business access. There are plenty of Web hosts whose domain was registered before that. netmar.com, for example, was registered December 21, 1994.

The first domain name registered was symbolics.com, March 15, 1985, I believe. Another elder is uu.net, May 20, 1987. Or rpi.edu, March 25, 1986. cmu.edu, April 24, 1985.

Sorry, got carried away there :)

What does it have to do with their domain names? I simply asked about their business.

I merely thought you were referring to which companies have been online the longest, sorry.

sometimes the companies that were the pioneers are now the leaders. Most of these companies that you listed where backed by millions of venture capital, unlike the ones today which are run out of peoples basements.
