View Full Version : Meteor Showers
SI-Chris 11-18-2001, 02:56 AM Supposedly the best meteor shower in a generation is happening tonight. Anybody seen anything yet? The best viewing time is reported to be at 2 AM (I'm not sure if that's Pacific time or just local time wherever you are).
I did a little surfing and found this: http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/space/11/16/meteor.showers/index.html
Quill 11-18-2001, 04:07 AM Hmmm...are you a meteor lover? Anyway, I'll be too sleepy for that.
JustinK 11-18-2001, 04:32 AM I'll be watching out, but for some reason this town has a mysterious anti-meteor shower cloud shield that functions perfectly. :| I'll be out there trying to see something anyway though.
SI-Chris 11-18-2001, 04:47 AM Hey! I've already seen a bunch of them, and it's not even prime viewing time yet. All of the ones I've seen have gone from east to west.
Had to take a break from watching because I was getting a stiff neck. :)
edude 11-18-2001, 05:17 AM Is this viewable in AU? i'm looking out my window, i can see nothing :(
Not fair, downunder we are left out.
getweb 11-18-2001, 05:33 AM Nah, Australia's supposed to see some stuff too. Your peak is like around 3AM local evening of Nov 18th-19th.
Here's an world-wide estimator for everybody, but if you're reading this post it's getting to be peak time soon anyway! I'm seeing about 2/minute right now...

edude 11-18-2001, 05:46 AM Thanks its a few hours till then, i'm staying awake!
JustinK 11-18-2001, 06:44 AM Clouds broke and I got a glimpse of it. That was absolutely gorgeous... There were a few small ones, but one that came through quite clear and then faded beneath the star sprinkled sky. I hurried in though because our yard seemed to be infested with lil bunnies. I don't mind the bunnies, I do mind what hops over the fence to eat the bunnies.
SI-Chris 11-18-2001, 06:46 AM STAY AWAKE! This is really spectacular! I've seen several that were different colors, one bright one that was blue/orange/white. You can clearly see the "tails" on the bright ones, which seem to linger for a second or two after the meteor flashes by, then quickly evaporate. I've also seen several that look like they're skipping off the atmosphere; they appear quickly, then reappear on the same trajectory further down on the horizon.
Anyway, had to come inside and warm up a little. :)
getweb 11-18-2001, 07:29 AM It was really clear here about 2AM but around 4:30 it got cloudy. It was a pretty good show, I saw a couple big ones with the glowing tails.
Here's the best of what I got with my Sony DSC-S30, taken at 1280x960 with a 4 second shutter, focus infinite: [~36KB]
Scott 11-18-2001, 07:48 AM Watched from 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. CDT and was able to see about a dozen meteors; between the fog, cloud cover and the city lights viewing was far from ideal but worth it.
I hope to have better viewing conditions in 2099!
kmb999 11-18-2001, 08:33 AM I was up at around 4:00AM EST watching them. This was supposedly the clearest time to watch them here in the north-eastern us. It was pretty cool, there were some really huge ones. I understand that the meteor shower is still going on (but it's too light here), and if I'm right it should be seen in western europe right now. Now that I think of it, I should have made an AVI and uploaded it. I timed it out to around 5:15AM EST there was about one every five seconds. I watched until around 6:00AM EST, it was a little passed sunrise, but they could still be seen.
Lawrence 11-18-2001, 08:50 AM I was looking forward to seeing it, but it's overcast and raining outside :(
Hostexp - the time I heard was 4am-4:30am (that's Canberra).
Mike the newbie 11-18-2001, 11:26 AM I got up early (3:30am EST) to see them. The sky was crystal clear :) due to a cold front that just blew in :(. About four or five "sightings" per minute. A great assortment of colors, length of trails, brightness, etc. They originated in a spot in the sky just south of "straight above me". My friends and I went to a state park that left the gates open for the event (normally, the park closes at dark). The park is on top of a ridge in a town with few lights, so viewing conditions were excellent.
Came back home around 5:45am when the sun started to light up the eastern sky a bit (plus it was cold out there on top of that hill!).
Rewdog 11-18-2001, 02:17 PM Isn't it cool we all could have seen the exact same meteor though we are on different parts of the world? ;)
slade 11-18-2001, 02:36 PM We were up watching them at 5am Eastern. Alot of them yes, but no fancy colors :(
We did get a few that lit up like sparklers in the sky... You could be facing one way and see it light up behind you. We had an excelent view, most in the southeast to south, but some all around. For once, it's good to live in the country... (except, no fast internet :bawling: )
I hurried in though because our yard seemed to be infested with lil bunnies. I don't mind the bunnies, I do mind what hops over the fence to eat the bunnies.
JustinK, what, may I ask, jumps over the fence?
Varun Shoor 11-18-2001, 05:07 PM Wolves? or foxes? :P
AH-Tina 11-18-2001, 05:43 PM ARGHHHHH!!! I was south of Chicago, Illinois (USA) and it was FOGGY! Couldn't see anything beyond about 20 yards in front of us. :(

RotoHost 11-18-2001, 06:07 PM It was a crystal clear night here in New Jersey....what a show!

Coyotes. And I know what everyone says, "they're more afraid of you than you are of them." HAH! They don't seem to be too scared around here. Saw one out front when I went to get the paper, and kind of walked myself back in. Went back out later and the tracks headed right for the door (it was muddy). I'm not about to trust the things.
Anyway, maybe there'll still be a few little streaks going on tonight. Probably not, but I'll stay hopeful.
kmb999 11-18-2001, 10:09 PM Lol, does anybody have any idea what it's like be chased down the street on your bike by a coyote when your onyl five or six years old. :D
It happened to me, and it wasn't very fun at all. :stickout
