What are you looking for?

An inexpensive SSL certificate? A web hosting provider that provides SSL to you? Or maybe you're happy with your hosting and they don't provide SSL, and so you're looking for a third party that offers just SSL secure services without having to buy your own certificate?

I thought open srs or tucows has a cheaper option. You might want to find a reseller of open srs/tucows.

If you just want to protect an order page for example, many hosts offer SSL space with a shared certificate, at no extra cost. It's therefore worth asking potential hosts if they do offer this option, as it will likely cost you much less than purchasing your own SSL certificate.

Just something to consider.

If you want your own certificate, ssl4less is a pretty cheap source. They are a reseller for equifax -- and are cheaper than buying from them directly.

Try Freessl.com for one year at $0 if you like there services then renew it at $99 for next one year. I dont think you will get better deal than this. If you get then please us know

I could have sworn freessl doesn't work with Cpanel - or ie, and it is a Netscape only certificate.

Don't quote me on it tho :D

Actually you got it the other way around, it does work on quite a few browser, heck it'll work on all browsers (i think) however netsape doesnt recognize the cert, whereas IE does.

And i think it should work on cpanel as there's no reason why not :)

Asher.

It does work on the newer netscape versions. Not sure how far back into the versions it works though.

Now, my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) is that if you use a shared certificate using your own domain, a window will pop up warning your visitor that the name on the certificate doesn't match the domain. That is something you don't want to happen! I'd rather have no certificate than scare visitors with this kind of popup.

What I know that some webhosts do is have a shared domain on their servers, so that the pages on your site go to those pages for a secured transaction. The URL doesn't match yours, but it still looks like a good idea.

Does anyone know any quality, reasonably priced webhosts that offer this?

there are a number of unix hosts that offer the free shared acces to ssl. Palmversa.com being one.

i don't know of any that actually offer it through a windows box.

Strangely enough, I just emailed venturesonline.com about this very thing and was told that if it was set up correctly, you won't get the 'name on certificate does not match name of site' thing come up.

The key here is - if set up correctly, but that seems to answer the basic issue. I think it comes as part of all their plans too.
